APA New Jersey is fundraising
Support the 2024 Summer City Planning Institute
The New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association, in partnership with the Center for Community Planning, is excited to launch a fundraiser to benefit our innovative summer program designed for public high school and middle school students.
What is the Summer City Planning Institute?
Since its inception in 2017, the CPI has been transforming the way students perceive and interact with their neighborhoods. This immersive program introduces young minds to the field of city planning, empowering them to envision and implement change in their communities. By fostering an early interest in urban planning, we aim to diversify and enrich New Jersey’s future planning professionals to reflect the vibrant diversity of our population.
Why Support the CPI?
- Transformative Education: Students gain hands-on experience in community development, policy-making, and urban planning through a curriculum crafted by the Center for Community Planning and delivered by a New Jersey-certified teacher.
- Professional Mentorship: Professional planners, guest speakers, and field trips provide students with invaluable insights and experiences.
- Real-World Application: Students apply their learning in projects tailored to their own communities, culminating in a community showcase where they present their plans to local officials and stakeholders.
- Equitable Access: The program is completely free for students, who also receive a stipend, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder participation.
2024 Program Highlights
This summer, the CPI will expand to include over 100 students from Newark, Paterson, Passaic, and Bloomfield. Here’s what they’ll be working on:
- Newark Students: Crafting proposals to make local and school communities safer and more supportive for young people.
- Paterson Students: Developing plans to attract visitors from the Great Falls National Park to support local businesses.
- Passaic Students: Collaborating with residents to identify the best locations for new bike rental stations in line with the city’s transportation plans.
- Bloomfield Students: Designing strategies to make the downtown area more attractive and pedestrian-friendly, encouraging local patronage.
