This campaign is committed to bringing more diversity to children's literature by creating books and activities featuring children of color to show them that they matter.
Despite the diversity among children, characters of color are underrepresented in children's literature. Research shows that while white characters are featured in 73.3% of books, children of color (Asian, Latinx, African-American, and First Nation combined) are featured in only 26.7% of books. As a result, children of color don't get the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the books they read. This has negative consequences for a child's self-image and self-esteem.
Every dollar contributed to this campaign will be used toward the development of an online community and print materials (books, activity sheets, games, etc.) featuring children of color, to empower them and to encourage others to acknowledge and affirm their beauty, humanity, and impact on the world.
Costs to get this project going:
- Website/Domain: $20
- Illustrator/ Graphic Designer Fees: $600
- Marketing: $300
- Self-Publishing Package: $2,000
