Change is Possible 100 km Run (Nicholas Pasieczka)

Change is Possible!

Earlier this year I attended The Conference on Sustainability in Engineering in British Columbia, where I discovered a lack of clear answers to what our generation can do to change the future.

Following this conference I felt pretty depressed about the pathway humanity is on in relation to the environment. Many people my age are cynical about the influence they can have, or the impact of their actions to make a real difference.

As part of my run I decided to raise awareness of good work being done in the space of renewable energy and how other people can make a difference. I searched for an organization actively changing the future and found Pollinate Group.

Pollinate Group is an example of young people taking action and having a real impact. Six years ago they were founded by six Australians and they’ve saved 65,000 tons of CO2 by helping people in poverty transition from toxic kerosene to solar lighting, which has many more benefits.

While India and Nepal (where Pollinate Group works) and Canada are culturally different, we can all learn a lot from each other and adopt each other’s models of success. If people living in extreme poverty are changing their habits and stopping using kerosene for fuel, I know that Canadians can speed up the transition to cleaner alternatives as well.

The Issue
Many slums are not connected to grid electricity or mains water supply, forcing people to go without, or to resort to unsafe products. Families rely on harmful kerosene for their lighting needs, they drink unclean water, and cook with dirty stoves.

That's why Pollinate Group (formerly known as Pollinate Energy) is helping to empower women as leaders of change to distribute products, such as solar lights and water filters, that improve health, save time and save money for the world’s most neglected communities.

Until 31 May 2019, Ethicaljobs.com.au will match, dollar for dollar, every donation made to Pollinate Group, up to a total of $25,000! I will be closing the go-fund-me page on May 10th and sending the money to them where it will be doubled.

Why Donate?

Lakshmi was one of the millions of people living in poverty across India. Together with her four children, 25 year old Lakshmi survived without access to basic needs that Australians take for granted, like energy, clean water and plumbing.

When Pollinate Group first met Lakshmi five years ago she was doing all she could to keep her children in school, but with only toxic kerosene for light, she struggled to finish all her chores each day and her children could not finish their homework in the dark.

Lakshmi was one of Pollinate Group's first customers and she bought a solar light, a product she had never heard of before. To make products affordable to customers, who live on less than $1.50 a day, Lakshmi could purchase the light on a payment plan and compared to kerosene she now saves $100 a year.

Then last year Lakshmi decided to join Pollinate Group as a sales agent, to sell products that improve the quality of life.

Lakshmi now works with fellow women in the slums to help them save time, money and live healthier and more comfortable lives.

You can make a difference?

Your donation today will provide neglected communities with access to quality solar products, so families can be healthier, save money, and children can study at night. And whatever you give, EthicalJobs.com.au will double it:

$52 - Makes a solar lamp accessible to an ultra poor family, so children can do homework at night.

$107 - Enables a family living in poverty to install a solar light home system, which safely lights three areas.

$230 - Delivers business skills training and materials to one new woman entrepreneur, like Lakshmi, to distribute solar lights to up to 15 families every month.

Thanks!
Your generosity and support does not go unnoticed and will help the people who need it most. Together we are able to change the world.
