Chair City MAKERspace

$10,280 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 20 people in 11 months
The Chair City Makerspace is a 501c3 non-profit partnership between community volunteers, social entrepreneurs, educators, and industry to encourage and promote innovation.

The "Maintenance Evangelist" Joel Leonard and Thomasville HS Carpentry Instructor Andrew Clement have teamed up to build on the rich tradition of craftsmanship in our community and help fuel the creative energy of a new generation of MAKERS. We will start hosting MAKER work shops this Fall to inspire and encourage collaboration and innovation between industry, education, and the community.

We are starting Saturday, September 9th with a series of "pop up" MAKER events.  Our first ever "Build a Chair" events will give participants the opportunity make their own farmhouse chair to take home. Spectators will have the opportunity to learn about the building process and bid on chairs to be auctioned.  All over the world, the name "Thomasville" is synonymous with quality furniture craftsmanship.  It is our hope that these skills and traditions will be revived and innovative minds will join us in teaching a new generation.

The funds raised in this initial campaign will be used to purchase equipment such as a laser engraver, CNC shop bot, and other state of the art equipment.  Funds will also be used to promote and facilitate the creation of a true brick and mortar MAKERspace in Thomasville.  This type of facility would provide full-time access of equipment and shop time for members. It would also host workshops and summer camps for students and adults.
