CER Paulina's Double Knee Surgery

Meet Chicagoland Eskie Rescue's Paulina! This adorable little 4 year old female Eskie was rescued from a CA shelter after being left behind when her sister dog was adopted without her. You may ask, was it because the family could only adopt one dog? No, it was because of Paulina's "bad" rear legs. Paulina is mobile, but both back legs are very compromised, shorter and weaker than normal. The issue is Grade 4 Lateral Luxating Patella in both back legs. In our vet's own words, this is the worse case he has ever seen. Depending on how well the atrophied muscles respond, if our doc cannot stretch the soft tissue enough, he may need to cut the femurs down & then turn the tibia's since they are currently going in the wrong direction. Paulina's rear legs are already shorter than they should be, because they weren't allowed to grow properly due to the constant pulling from the bands that run above and below the patella (kneecap). It's also possible the Paulina may require an additional surgery if either of the patellas and attaching bands snap back into the presurgical position. Paulina will require very extensive rehab after the surgery as there is almost no muscle mass in the hind quarters. Paulina has seen multiple vets, including the specialist who will be doing the surgery. Paulina is very sweet, and amazingly resilient despite the pain she has been enduring for most of her 4 years of life. Our specialist feels that she is a strong candidate for this surgery, and with the perfect temperament to get through the months of rehab that she has ahead.

The $5500.00 is the estimate for the surgery, obviously not including any additonal suregry if needed.  This is a huge expense for Chicagoland Eskie Rescue to take on, and as always, not our only current medical case.
