Celebration of Life for Jessica

Jessica Sommers passed away at 38 years old on February 7th.  Jessica was both an amazing Mom to her 6 year old daughter Ava and an amazing wife to her husband Scott.  She had been battling liver disease for years before things intensified this year.  Jessica landed in Intensive Care on January 6th with pneumonia and liver failure.  Over the course of the next 33 days, Jessica suffered 3 strokes as a result of poor liver function.  She was no longer able to talk or move.  In spite of her fierce fight, her body eventually could not take anymore.

From volunteering at the local elementary school, to running an online liver support group, to helping run a community based Facebook group in Mission Viejo Jessica loved helping others and being part of her community. This GoFundMe page is to help cover medical expenses incurred and to help bring light to Liver disease.

The current process for liver transplants is flawed. Liver transplants are determined by a score called a MELD score, which does not provide a full picture. Based on the calculation, Jessica was too healthy. In order to remain healthy, Jessica took as many as 12 different medications a day, none of which were pain killers. She needed plasma and platelet transfusions.  Jessica fought through constant pain, critically low potassium and magnesium  levels that could have killed her at any moment. When reaching the hospital this January, she became disqualified as she was now too sick for a transplant.

Jessica will be missed by many.  I hope the National transplant process changes so others do not have to lose their life so very early.
