Giving Hope to Families with Cancer
I am Amanda Harrison.... I am a cancer survivor.
I am celebrating 10 YEARS of being cancer-free on March 9, 2017 after being diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer and given six months to live in January, 2007! (Read more about my journey at www.tethered.life)
I am spreading hope and love and need your support.
To celebrate this tremendous milestone, my family and I have decided to donate art supplies and gift cards for young children and teens fighting cancer at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago as listed on their website of desired items. I have contacted the hospital and will continue to work with them to make this extra special for the families fighting and for our own children in an effort to raise awareness in them and encourage giving and helping others. Our family will use the money donated here (in addition to our own contributions) to purchase items and then together we will deliver them to the hospital. We had wanted to volunteer and do a craft in their family center (as I have done before), but it's flu season and outside kids are not permitted for obvious reasons, so this donation is the closest we can get that allows our children to participate in something so special and important.
How does this help spread hope to fighting families? I plan to write my story for families to read... since I am unable to visit them personally, an encouraging short story with my words of love and hope is an effort I plan to make when we donate these gifts the hospital needs for families fighting cancer. The most hope I had during my experience was having a friendship with a long-term survivor... now I'm on the other side to share that with others.
Donations are needed soon so we have time to get the items, set up the delivery and make it to the hospital on March 14th (date tentative). UPDATE: weather prevented us from donating on March 14th. We are working with the hospital to arrange a new day and time likely the first week in April.
I cannot express how thankful I am for your support! I remember as a fighter how so many people pitched in to do things like this for me. To be able to be on the other side is nothing short of a miracle and a gift. To be able to include my family in this is an even bigger blessing.
THANK YOU for sharing this with your friends and family and THANK YOU for your support. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of delivering these gifts - the more the merrier.
