Ribble Cycling Performance Squad

The number of riders taking up cycling as a sport in the UK is growing exponentially. With this growth in uptake, the pool of talented young athletes, moving up from the well supported Youth (U14/U16) network of clubs and NGB support to the Junior (16-18) age category is ever increasing.  Whilst there is a large amount of support from the sport’s governing body at Youth level, only a very small number of these riders are selected to receive support in the Junior age category. For the vast majority, there are limited options to develop in an environment which includes coaching, mentoring, training camps, facility access and race support. Without this much needed support, many of these riders fall away from the sport, and in most cases long before they have had a chance to fully develop and explore their potential.

Cycling Performance Squad (CPS) has been established to provide support to some of these talented Juniors and allow them to continue to grow and evolve as bike racers in a fully supportive environment, and potentially pursue careers as professional cyclists.

The team is built upon a foundation of coaching and education that is much needed to prepare the riders not only to compete at National Junior Level, but also to allow them to explore the possibility of a future career in the sport.
Each rider on the team is provided with 1-2-1 coaching of the highest standard, provided by the team coach and manager, Dan Small. Training is fully flexible and prescribed specifically for the needs of each individual. Each CPS rider receives a daily training programme with unlimited support and feedback from their coach. Riders also have access to monthly weekend training camps which are both road and track based, and include workshops on a wide range of topics including nutrition, psychology, race prep, warm up, pedaling efficiency, race strategies and tactics and many more subjects that developing young riders need knowledge of to help them progress in the sport. In addition to the regular weekend training camps the team also delivers week-long training camps in Mallorca. The team provides a National race calendar, tailored to each individual, with riders themselves choosing their races across all cycling disciplines. At least one team coach is present at all National road events and where applicable a Team Car is also present. Opportunities to race in Europe will also be provided. 2019 is the team’s first season.
