My name is Amy Buehler and I am an instructor at Columbia Basin College’s High School Academy. The CBC High School Academy (HSA) is an innovative high school on the college campus, which provides students an educational opportunity to achieve a high school diploma through an accelerated academic program. This program serves students ages 16 through 20, who have dropped out of high school or are at risk of dropping out.

I am attaching a letter from our 2017-2018 Space Hawks Team.

Dear Friends:

We are the High School Academy “Intellectual Space Hawks Mars Rover Team” at Columbia Basin College. Our goal is to design, engineer, and fabricate a Mars Rover to compete in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge at NASA’s Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. 2018 will mark the 25th anniversary of this challenge, which features an engineering design challenge to engage students worldwide in the next phase of human space exploration. The competition challenges high school and college students to create a vehicle designed to traverse the simulated surface of another world. This will be our 4th time participating in the challenge and to date we are the only school group from the Pacific Northwest (high school or college) to enter this competition. This is a truly rewarding experience for all involved. Our team is looking forward to testing our newly acquired skills against those of over 150 other institutions throughout the United States and the world.

The objective of this program is to promote interest in STEM education while building leadership skills among today’s youth. This experience includes, but is not limited to students learning: design, technical drawing, elementary engineering, higher level mathematics, technical writing, public speaking and science just to name a few! The students receive hands on experience learning such skills as welding, machining, automotive technology, Auto CAD and 3D printing. As a member of the “Space Hawks,” we not only earn high school credit, we work with college professors and receive mentoring from upper-level college students, and have the exciting opportunity to meet scientists, engineers and former astronauts. We will also visit the NASA Air and Space Museum while we are in Huntsville. This program can open doors for our future endeavors. Graduates from our program continue to excel; some examples of this include attending college or university, accepting NASA internships, and public speaking to share their stories and accomplishments, just to name a few.

We are currently seeking financial sponsorship to help with the Rover building materials and trip expenses to Huntsville, AL. Travel expenses run about $1800 per student, which includes all transportation, accommodations, meals and educational activities. We are asking contributors to help sponsor a student or help with the acquisition of materials through either financial and/or material donations to assist us in reaching our goal. If it is possible for you to support us by making a contribution, we would greatly appreciate it. Any amount is helpful. Our team is eager to share photographs and experiences from our experience online after the competition. The departure date for our trip is April 10, 2018. Your generous, tax-deductible contribution would enable us to share in this wonderful opportunity. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration and support.

Per aspera ad astra,

The “Intellectual Space Hawks”

The students are very excited about this challenge, which includes an educational engagement award this year which gives them the opportunity to promote STEM in the schools; an opportunity for them to give back passing along their passion for STEM.

Thank you very much for your consideration!

Ad astra,
Amy
