Castlefreke Footpaths Appeal

Donation protected
Many, many thanks to all who contributed to the Castlefreke Footpaths Appeal. Online donations through GoFundMe together with cash donations means we have reached the target.

A cheque has already been presented to Cork County Council as 50% of the total community contribution (Rathbarry Tidy Towns has committed to raising the other 50%).

Michael Tobin, executive engineer with Cork County Council (Clonakilty office), hopes to commence the work in January, and the plan is to build a footpath along the Avenue (the road running through Castlefreke Woods) and another adjacent to Long Strand, thereby creating a continuous walk around Castlefreke Woods, Long Strand and Kilkeran Lake.

Coillte also intends to build a footpath very soon from the Western Lodge entrance to Castlefreke Woods as far as the entrance road to Rathbarry Castle – i.e. joining up with the new Cork County Council footpath.

So many thanks again to all contributors. The fundraising has been an overwhelming success and reflects the love of Castlefreke Woods by so many people in West Cork and beyond, as well as the desire to keep this magnificent recreation area in public ownership.

YOUR HELP NEEDED: Castlefreke Our Woods Our Walks is seeking to raise €7,875 for new footpaths in
Castlefreke Woods and Long Strand.

Coillte (the state forestry agency) and Cork County Council will shortly commence work on NEW FOOTPATHS IN CASTLEFREKE WOODS (a very popular public recreation area). The footpaths will be built alongside the road that runs through the woods, and will be an enormous improvement to the amenity, and – as importantly – will enhance the safety of walkers.

• The Cork County Council footpaths will be funded by a grant under the COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SCHEME that requires the local community to contribute 15% of the total cost of €105,000. The COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION will be €15,750.
Castlefreke Our Woods Our Walks (an association that campaigns to keep the woods in public ownership) is committed to raising half of the community contribution: €7,875. Rathbarry Tidy Towns is committed to raising the other half.
• We are appealing to all members and supporters of Castlefreke Our Woods Our Walks to make a generous contribution to the fund. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make an enormous improvement to the amenity, and will be very important for keeping Castlefreke Woods in PUBLIC OWNERSHIP.
• Cork County Council also plans to build a new footpath alongside the road running behind Long Strand. This will connect up with the Coillte footpath leading to Kilkerran Lake.
• The new footpaths (both Coillte and Cork County Council) will create a continuous/looped walk around Castlefreke Woods and Long Strand, which is sure to be very popular with walkers.

Castlefreke Our Woods Our Walks was established in May this year to campaign against the sale of Castlefreke Woods by Coillte. Our campaign was successful in preventing a proposed sale to a private owner, and now we are working to improve this superb public recreation area and to ensure it remains in public ownership.
