Casey Cagle's Medical Support Fund

On May 21, 2019, Casey Cagle went into UC Davis hospital for a routine heart catheterization.  During the procedure, Casey began to form blood clots in his heart which ultimately lead to a massive heart attack.  What was to be a 1-2 hour procedure, turned into a 12 hour effort to save his life.  When he emerged from surgery, Casey was on multiple life support machines and we were told his chance of survival was minimal.  Casey was placed in a medically induced coma, and for the next 12 days he showed the doctors exactly what he was made of.  He fought through 6 procedures in those 10 days, each time getting closer and closer to recovery.  On May 31, 2019, Casey was removed from the final heart support machine, only remaining on the ventilator.  The expectation was that over that weekend Casey would begin to be weened off the final machine and on the road to recovery.  Unfortunately, during a routine CT scan that afternoon, it was discovered that Casey had blood clots throughout his body, caused by an immune reaction to the heprin he had been receiving since he entered the hospital.  Heprin Induced Thrombocytopenia is an extremely rare disorder, and there is limited medical studies on how to treat it, especially with the severity that he has.  He immediately began a medication regimen in hopes of stopping the progression.  However, by June 2, 2019, it became clear that Casey would not survive without taking extreme measures.  And even if he did, he would lose his limbs without surgical intervention.  On the night of June 2, 2019, Casey underwent 9 hours of surgery including a surgical thrombectomy (to remove blood clots from as much of the body as possible) and a fasciotomy (opening of the legs to release pressure on them).  As of today, June 6, 2019, Casey continues to fight.  He is beginning to wake up and continues with treatment for the blood clots.  He remains on the ventilator and is still extremely critical.  We have been told that his fight for life is far from over.  But we know his love of life, and his love for his family and friends, will drive him to beat this.  He is the strongest person we know, and we will support him every step of the way.

His recovery will be very long, at least another month or more in the hospital and then months of rehabilitation.  Any funds raised will go to supporting him during this difficult time along with his wife Joanna, daughter Kaitlin, and son Logan.  He is an amazing man who is showing extreme courage, beating the odds, and showing that he will overcome this.
