Cars for Syrian Refugees

We are all devastated by the refugee ban that President Trump issued to bar Syrian refugees (and others!) from entering the United States. These refugee families have already been through so much and it is so unusual for the US to shut its doors to them. Although the ban seem to have been halted for now, who knows what’s next? It is important we do all we can to combat these hateful actions, to counter darkness with Light and hate with Love. The best way to react to this unjustified hatred is to increase our help for the Syrian refugee families who have arrived in Atlanta and live right around the corner.
Empowering Refugees, our organization, is launching this GoFundMe campaign to raise $25,000 to purchase 12 used cars, with their title and initial 6 months insurance, for 12 different Syrian refugee families. Atlanta is a wonderful city, but it’s sprawling, and a car can SO change the quality of life of a refugee family! Without a car, every time refugees go to the grocery store, head to work, travel to a meeting at their resettlement agency, go to a doctor’s appointment, etc, they need to spend money for a bus ticket or rely on others for a ride. Having a car tremendously boosts their lives — giving them more independence and allowing them to accept further away jobs with much better pay. Of all the stuff you can give refugees, a CAR IS THE BEST GIFT and will help make the biggest impact for them.

Empowering Refugees is a small grassroots organization committed to making this world a better place by helping refugee families feel welcome and providing resources to help them thrive in their new home. For over a year, we’ve helped dozens of Syrian refugee families find jobs, learn English, and navigate their lives here in the US. We’ve furnished their homes with essentials, taught them English, helped them secure jobs, connect with friends, and showed them what true Southern hospitality means. We connect with newly arrived refugees through our longstanding contacts with resettlement agencies like the International Rescue Committee and New American Pathways.
In October, with your help, we were thrilled to raise more than our goal of $4,000 for a Blanket and Winter Coats Drive for these families. Today, we’re launching our biggest campaign yet, and we need your help. Every donation counts towards making a direct impact on the life of a Syrian refugee. Please spread the word about our campaign to family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. Together, we can be the light in a world that’s becoming darker.
When we have raised our goal, we will withdraw the funds with help from ICNA Relief and work with other organizations with experience purchasing used cars for refugees. We will buy reliable cars that will serve our new neighbors well. And we will purchase all titles and six months of insurance to ensure that these families have everything they need.
