Carolina María Tejada de 15 años, era una niña alegre , deportista y amiguera , excelente alumna y maravillosa hija y hermana. Su vida cambió radicalmente en Noviembre de 2017. Un día comenzó a sentir pánico, ansiedad por todo lo que le rodeaba, pensamientos confusos, alucinaciones, delirios, comportamientos desinhibidos, trastornos del sueño, trastornos del movimiento por lo cual se la llevó donde varios médicos especialistas y después de muchos evaluaciones médicas y tratamientos los médicos concluyeron que lo que Carolina padecía era de origen psiquiátrico.
Carolina tiene seguro médico Internacional, pero las enfermedades de origen psiquiátrico no fueron cubiertas por su seguro médico, por lo que todos los exámenes, citas médicas y remedios lo pagaron sus padres, Ronald Y Carolina de Tejada, siendo estos costos muy elevados que vinieron a desequilibrar completamente las finanzas familiares. A pesar de la medicina que le daban diariamente el estado de salud de Carolina empeoraba día a día, provocándole estados psicóticos, volviéndose su vida un infierno, tanto para ella, como para su familia, por no tener un diagnóstico certero para su enfermedad.
En Julio del 2018 se agravó el cuadro con convulsiones severas y continuas; Se le volvió a realizar todo tipo de exámenes médicos, después de un largo sufrimiento internada en la clínica, finalmente pudieron diagnosticarla con “ENCEFALITIS AUTOINMUNE NMDA” , lo cual es una enfermedad muy rara y difícil de diagnosticar ya que se confunde con enfermedades de índole psiquiátricas, epilepsia y otras cosa más. Esta enfermedad se produce cuando los anticuerpos producidos por el propio sistema inmunológico, atacan los receptores NMDA que se encuentran en su mayoría en el cerebro. Los receptores de NMDA son proteínas que participan en el control de los impulsos eléctricos en el sistema nervioso central. Sus funciones son esenciales para el juicio, la percepción de la realidad, la interacción humana, la formación y la recuperación de la memoria, el dormir, hablar, escribir, ver, caminar y el control de las actividades inconscientes. (como la respiración, la deglución, etc.).
Tan pronto fue diagnosticada correctamente fue tratada en su país Ecuador, como seguía estando en estado crítico se la trasladó en avión ambulancia a Estados Unidos en busca desesperada de tratamiento médico para Carolina; y fue ingresada en el Nicklaus Children's Hospital en la ciudad de Miami, Florida. Lamentablemente por ser una enfermedad nueva y rara para la medicina actual, los unicos tipos de tratamientos existentes utilizados a nivel mundial y que son efectivos para tratar su diagnostico, todavia no estan autorizados por por la FDA, razon por la cual los Seguros medicos internacionales no estan autorizados para cubrirlos y pagarlos, cuyo costo es de $28.000 por la dosis que corresponde a un mes del tratamiento y se le tiene que aplicar 1 vez al mes por mínimo un año, necesitando de urgencia seguir con el tratamiento y al no recibirlo se está poniendo en riesgo su vida.

Carolina María Tejada, a 15 year old, was a cheerful girl, athlete, friend, excellent student, and a wonderful daughter and sister. In November 2017, her life changed drastically. One day she suddenly began to feel panic, anxiety about everything around her, confused thoughts, hallucinations, delusions, uninhibited behaviors, sleep disorders, movement disorders. For these reasons, she was taken to several medical specialists, and after many medical evaluations and treatments, the doctors concluded that what Carolina suffered from was of psychiatric origin.
Carolina has International medical insurance, but it does not cover psychiatric diseases, so all the exams, medical appointments and remedies were paid for by her parents, Ronald and Carolina de Tejada. These high costs began to completely unbalance the family finances. In spite of the medicine she takes daily, Carolina's state of health worsened day by day, provoking psychotic states, turning her life into hell, both for her and her family, because an accurate diagnosis for her illness could not be found.
In July of 2018, the situation worsened further with the onset of severe and continuous seizures. She went back to the hospital where additional medical examinations and evaluations were performed and after much suffering, the doctors were finally able to diagnose her with Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE), a rare disease difficult to diagnose since it is often confused with psychiatric conditions and epilepsy, among other things. This disease occurs when antibodies produced by the immune system attack the NMDA receptors that are mostly in the brain. NMDA receptors are proteins that participate in the control of electrical impulses in the central nervous system. Its functions are essential for judgment, the perception of reality, human interaction, training and recovery of memory, sleeping, talking, writing, walking, seeing and control of unconscious activities. (like breathing, swallowing, etc.).
As soon as she was correctly diagnosed, she was treated in her country of Ecuador, since she was still in critical condition, she was flown to the United States in desperate search of medical treatment and she was admitted at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Florida. Unfortunately for being a new and rare sickness for today's medicine, the only types of existing treatments used worldwide and effective in treating her diagnosis, are not yet authorized by the FDA, which is why international medical insurance are not authorized to cover and pay for the treatment, which cost is $28,000 per month, and it must be applied once a month for at least a year.
