Who are we?
Hi! We are the officers of Carmel Science Olympiad, an entirely student-run organization at Carmel High School that competes in Science Olympiad competitions throughout the school year. The purpose of our club is to promote participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and train future scientists in a friendly yet competitive setting.

Science Olympiad is like a track meet for science: at competitions, some of us do chemistry labs, others build electronic circuits, and yet others test mousetrap-powered cars of our own design. We compete in roughly two dozen events covering every area of STEM.

Our history
Historically, Carmel Science Olympiad has been a very strong team, perennially winning our state competition and representing Indiana at the national competition.

Starting in the mid-2000s, we had a drought of state-winning teams, but we have recently broken this trend. In 2016, 2018 and 2019, we once again won the privilege of competing at the national competition. Our program has shown incredible growth over the last few years, with several of our members winning first place in their events at the national competition in 2019 against the top competitors from every other US state. We hope to continue this trend of growth and qualify for the 2020 national tournament at North Carolina State University.

How can you help?
Most Science Olympiad events require little or no funding, but engineering events especially tend to consume a large amount of our budget. Here are some examples of last years’ engineering events and the materials we needed for them:

Wright Stuff: For this event in 2018-2019, competitors designed, built and tested an airplane powered by a rubber band. Throughout the season our team purchased several kits to construct airplanes and keep improving our design, totaling nearly $450.

Mousetrap Vehicle: For this event, competitors designed, built and tested a small car powered by mousetraps. The goal is for the car to independently execute a given motion with extremely high accuracy, so continuous redesign and improvement was crucial to our success in this event. Materials like carbon fiber rods, specialized wheels and ball bearings totaled almost $850.

We are looking to raise money to fund our competitors in these events, as well as to pay for transportation to competitions. Large or small, any donation will be extremely helpful to our preparation in the 2019-2020 season and our goal of representing Indiana again at the national tournament! Thank you for your support of our team!
