Carlie’s Story

Carlie Coombs is a 14-year-old who was diagnosed with POTS in February of 2018.  POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, it is a form of Dysautonomia.

In January 2018, Carlie was attending her school’s honors classes, helping with her church’s mission meals, and enjoying friends and youth group activities. A few days later her life changed completely.

Carlie was sleeping 20 hours a day, unable to attend school, dizzy, racing heart rate (133 just standing up), sick to her stomach, and a never ending headache that changed in severity from a dull ache to a migraine everyday. Any form of stress or excitement magnified symptoms and created more issues. In April, Carlie tried to get back to school but just half a day put her body in a tail spin. She slept for a week and then came down with a bug because her body couldn’t fight anything else. She was only able to attend another day and a half the rest of the school year.  Upon the onset of symptoms, Carlie went from a happy teenager, to a sick, non-functioning sleeping girl.

Researchers have found that the quality-of-life in POTS patients is comparable to patients on dialysis for kidney failure.  However, patients with POTS do not receive dialysis.

Treatments are slowly but steadily improving Carlie. She is currently using many natural remedies, herbs and oils, along with heart and blood pressure medicines, that amount to $350 a month.  After much research and consulting with experts, we have found a POTS Treatment Center. We feel this is Carlie’s best chance to begin to return to a “normal” life. This treatment Center is in Dallas, Texas.  It is unfortunate that there is nothing like facility this closer to Pennsylvania. Their success rate is extremely high and people travel from all around the world for their 8 days of treatment. This treatment comes at a price of $7000, which isn’t covered by insurance and doesn’t include airfare, lodging, or food for the 8 days in addition to her other monthly treatments as stated above.

We would be very grateful for any help to get Carlie the treatment she needs to return to being a teenager.  We also hope to raise awareness about POTS. Carlie has good and bad moments in each day but no matter the moment she doesn’t ever look different. She can’t “push through” being tired, her heart always races but is still full of love. There is no cure or quick fix. It will not kill her but yet it has taken her life. It’s time to get it back! Thank you for helping us to defy the odds and to get Carlie help, wherever it may take us. Trust in God, He has a plan.
