Cari's Elephant Internship

Donation protected
I have been offered the incredible opportunity to intern at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, meet and network with elephant advocates in India, and assist in opening a new elephant sanctuary in the U.S. This opportunity will put me in touch with the people and resources I need to begin an elephant sanctuary for captive zoo and circus elephants on the east coast of the U.S.

I've harbored a passion for elephants for many years and last year decided to take a leap of faith, cut back on my hours as a registered nurse, and start a graduate degree in Anthrozoology at Canisius College. Through my classes there and trans-species psychology classes through the Kerulos Center, I have gained insight and understanding of the immense suffering of elephants worldwide. My goal is to help the individual elephants in captivity in zoos and circuses in the United States by opening an elephant sanctuary. It will be a safe place for elephants to recover from the emotional wounds of captivity and live in peace with other healing elephants.

In order to do this, I need the support and expertise of elephant experts from around the world. Gay Bradshaw, PhD, PhD, who has contributed greatly to our understanding of elephant psychology, has offered me the opportunity to make these connections through a Kerulos Center internship. My journey of providing a sanctuary for elephants in the United States, begins here.

Visit this page  , to learn about other students who have participated in Kerulos Center internships. I will be interning at Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary   in Thailand.

I will be sharing my journey on my blog, One Shared Planet .

To learn more about elephant psyche and trauma, watch this video  by Gay Bradshaw, PhD, PhD. I also suggest her book, Elephants on the Edge

I'm happy to share the papers I have written on elephant PTSD, human-elephant conflict, captive elephant welfare, and elephants in India. Contact me if you are interested.

Thank you for supporting me as I work to better the lives of elephants.
