Care for Carla

"When nine-year-old Carla suffers a life-threatening tragic accident, her mother, Carmen, must leave her behind and make the dangerous journey from Bolivia to NYC where she hopes to earn enough to save her daughter’s life. Working in New York to support Carla’s medical needs, Carmen struggles and wrestles with the prospect of never seeing her daughter again...."

Carla was a happy nine year old little girl when she was accidentally run over by a bus which left her paralyzed.

Carla and her mother Carmen’s story is beautifully told in Director Nicholas Bruckman's Documentary, La Americana, which has been aired on PBS's America ReFramed and the National Geographic channel (see link to trailer at bottom of page).   The documentary has garnered many awards.

Due to the escalating/mounting healthcare costs Carla's mother had to make heartbreaking choices so eloquently told by Nicholas's Documentary in order to save her daughter's life and also improve the quality of her life, and she does it all on her own.  She is a true inspiration and we are proud to know her.

Since returning to Bolivia, Carla has grown up into a sweet and caring young lady.  Her love of animals and wish of becoming a Veterinarian inspires her to attend College when she is well enough.

Recently, Carla suffered a blood infection from dialysis.  She was unable to breath on her own.   Carla spent a month in a Hospital that couldn't guarantee a breathing apparatus or bed for her, telling us that she could get "kicked out" any day.   One of the staff members even "suggested" to Carmen to take her daughter off the breathing apparatus.  Carla is slowly recovering with arms bloated and bruised, making dialysis which is a struggle on its own, even more challanging and painful.    Carla's weakened immune system leaves her vulnerable and she needs to be monitored closely.

We are working in conjunction with Nicholas to raise funds for Carla's mounting medical expenses. We have been in touch with Carla & Carmen and have been providing financial aid to her since 2013. Along with Nick we have helped her through some very hard times but we need additional help now more than ever.  Carla needs and will continue to need constant medical care, monitoring and dialysis.

Carla needs access to a decent Hospital, reliable Doctors, and a staff dedicated to her wellness.  Basic medical care that Carla needs costs more than Carmen can handle.  The funds we are raising will all go to Carla's medical expenses.  Access to what she needs and the chance to have a future.

Carla could be anyone's little girl, yours & ours.
We are grateful for all contributions.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and please feel free to share Carla's story.
