Canto X : New Art for Our Voices
(Campaign ends March 12, 2018)
Society is changing. We are communicating across nations on multiple platforms. We are moving and adapting to new cultures and languages, regularly. We are discovering who are are, celebrating new identities, and learning how to interact with a new and rapidly changing world.
Great change necessitates great art to explore these new, important, and intimate ideas.
My name is Sophia Burgos and I am a Puerto-Rican soprano from Chicago, IL, now living in Köln, Germany. I have the great honor to be featured in the Resonant Bodies Festival this April 7th in Chicago, IL.
Resonant Bodies Festival - Chicago - Check it out!
I would like to create something massive. A brand new, 35 minute work, featuring diverse artists from all over the world.
TEXT - German poet, Daniel Gerzenberg, has been commissioned to write a new text featuring 6 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, and a Fantasy language). Daniel explores the depths of human identity, our inner conflicts, and the miscommunications and beauty that can emmerge from it.
MUSIC - American composer, Andrew Haig, has been commissioned to compose the score. Utilizing the full capacity of the human voice, from whispers to yells, and intricate extended techniques on classical instruments, he captures our past, faint lullabies of our youth, to the chants of our generation's desire to be heard.
Sophia Burgos (PR/USA) - Soprano
Fleur Barron (UK/Singapore) - Mezzo
Sammy Lesnick (USA) - Bass Clarinet
Luis Herrera (Costa Rica) - Percussion
Eric Singh (USA) - Guitar
These artists embody the diversity and spirit of this project. It was incredibly important to me to work with artists I connect with deeply and who could contribute emotionally to what Canto X seeks to explore.
Thanks to our generous platform, the Resonant Bodies Festival, we have a wonderful venue at Constellation Chicago . They have also provided us with full technical sound and lighting support, incredible publicity and project marketing, and a high quality video & audio recording of our performance!
In order to make my dream project come true, we need financial support. Unfortunately, the United States does not have enough public funding for artistic ventures and we must rely quite heavily on private support. Despite this, we must continue making great art with a community that believes culture should never cease to move forward. I hope you will join us in making this relevent and exciting work come to life!
Your Generous Support Will Cover:
- Rehearsal Space Rental
- Equipment Rental (Percussion instruments)
- Flights (2 international, 3 domestic)
- Andrew Haig's Commission

- Artist Fees
- ... a small bottle of champagne after our amazing premiere!!?
THANK YOU for supporting the creation of new art, believing that all artists deserve fair pay for their work, and contributing to cultural progress! It means the world to us.
