"We choose to run because they have no choice but to run."

Chris, Svenja and Natalie are running the Berlin marathon this Sunday, 16th September, to raise funds and awareness for Canterbury Welcomes Refugees. Chris and Svenja are also running the Chicago marathon 3 weeks later! 5 marathons in 3 weeks between us. Please sponsor us and support Canterbury Welcomes Refugees.

Canterbury Welcomes Refugees
is a community group that aims to welcome a family displaced by the violent conflict in Syria into our local area. We are volunteers working in partnership with Canterbury Diocese to support one or more families to find housing, jobs, language lessons, schools and doctors. We hope to offer friendship and advice, and empower the refugees to become self-sufficient and re-build their lives here in Canterbury.

The families are selected and screened under the Government’s Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, focusing on those in the greatest need, including people requiring urgent medical treatment, survivors of violence and torture, and women and children at risk. As part of the Home Office requirement Community Sponsors must raise at least £9000 per family to cover costs, including housing, furnishings, interpreters, English lessons and clothing.

(We are awaiting notification from the Charity Commission about our registration as a charity.)

For those who don't already know. Chris Powell is a retired GP and his wife Svenja Powell is a retired Social Worker and they live in Canterbury, Kent, UK. Natalie Powell works in Marketing and lives in Bromley, Kent. Chris and Svenja are involved, with a great team of people, in setting up a new Community Sponsorship group called Canterbury Welcomes Refugees (CWR).  Chris will be the Lead Sponsor for CWR and Svenja is the Project Lead, both are trustees of the new charity along with four others.

The Home Office requires Community Sponsorship groups to raise £9,000 before a family will be identified by UNHCR to be brought to Canterbury. CWR will be responsible for providing affordable housing for two years and all other support for a minimum of one year although of course we expect to support the family for longer. The money will be used to buy clothing, bedding, furnishing and equipping their home and other essentials for the family on their arrival in the UK. It will also be used for the cost of English language lessons, translation and interpreting costs. The six trustees of CWR will be responsible for allocating the money raised.

Thank you so much for your support.

Love Chris, Svenja and Natalie xx
