Cancer Awareness & Prevention

Tax deductible
I am focused on achieving the highest rank in Boy Scouts, which is Eagle Scout. As I prepare for this achievement, I am required to complete an Eagle Scout Project. My project is a Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program (CAPP) for Firefighters.

I selected this project because I am a junior volunteer firefighter at station 236 in Holiday Park, Plum Pennsylvania.
Through being a volunteer firefighter, I learned that the risks continue even after firefighters leave the building. The protective gear becomes covered in soot. This soot, which has cancer causing properties can get on Fire Fighters skins.
Research shows that Fire Soot is linked to cancer diagnoses for Firefighters.
In my fire department alone, we have had many firefighters get cancer from the soot, chemicals, etc. from fighting fires and saving peoples’ lives.

Cancer is much like a blazing fire. It can devastate people's’ lives. I, unfortunately have seen this first hand as I have had several of my grandparents die from cancer.  After evaluating my experiences and passions, I have decided that I would like to help make a difference and help prevent our firefighters from getting cancer and the first step would be my helping my fire department that I am a member at. Helping one Fire Department doesn’t seem like enough; however, the cost and effort to do this makes this project the biggest effort my troop has seen. My hope is that my effort will not only raise money to laundry uniforms and provide decon bags for the Holiday Park Fire Department 236 but it will educate and empower others to Protect the Firefighters who Protect us.

I will be working hard to raise $11,500.00. In addition to this Go Fund Me page, I will be holding various fundraising activities.

The money I raise will be used to:
Wash Firefighter Uniforms: Our fire department currently purchased new firefighter uniforms for each of our firefighters so when they return from a fire and go out to another fire they do not have to put on uniform that contains the fire soot and chemicals.  Our old uniforms currently need wash. It cost around $170.00 to wash these uniforms and we have around 50 uniforms that need wash. I am collecting funds to wash these uniforms.

I am also creating decon bags. These bags will provide Fire Fighters with the items they need to reduce spreading soot. The bags will be on the trucks and once a Firefighter has left the structure, they can clean up before getting on the truck. The bags will include decon wipes and fresh clothing.

Our Fire Department is operated 100% by volunteers. They are generously donating time and risking their lives to help save yours. Please consider supporting me and giving back to those who protect you and your families. This is a big initiative and I cannot do it without your help. Please consider donating. You can donate via this page or if you prefer, you can purchase supplies from my Amazon Wish List at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/MEJR42AGV5GA.
