We are Martha and Luis, a marketing associate and an Air Force pilot respectively. We are from a small, developing country in Central America, called Honduras.
My husband and I are a newly married couple who just had our first baby girl on May 11. Her birth was completely normal, Camila came to us at 7lbs, rosy cheeks and just perfection. We fell in love immediately. Three days later our gut feeling told us something wasn't right with Camila, but nothing could have prepared us for what the doctors told us. Our perfect baby girl was just diagnosed with severe epilepsy.
Having a baby is life changing for any couple, not to mention a baby with special needs. In a matter of hours we were surrounded by doctors, 24 hrs nurses, loving relatives and friends. We didn't leave the hospital for another 20 days. Everybody was helpful and doing everything in their power to reach a diagnosis. Despite everyones effort to help our country lacks technology.
After our doctors strong advice to seek an accurate diagnosis and treatment else where because of our lack of resources, technology and human expertise, we spent days and weeks, researching where was the best place to take our baby girl. We decided on Chile, to Clinica Las Condes. Camila received the attention that she needed, after 2 weeks of doctors visits, and intrusive exams we got her final diagnosis: Refractory Epilepsy.
The reason this diagnosis devastated us is because this type of epilepsy can´t be treated solely with medication. She needs Brain Surgery, this is the best chance she has for a full recovery. A week ago we got the email confirmation from her doctor that the surgery needs to happen when she turns 6 months old, meaning this November, 2018.
