CAMDENTON, MO – The Camdenton VFW’s new building, which houses the Francis Geilfuss II Community Center and the Bunker Bar & Grill opened its door for the first time on Thursday, August 3rd.

The Camdenton VFW has been trying to complete and fundraise for the new building for over 4 years. A project many believed would never get completed, due to multiple construction issues and funding problems. Many members and businesses worked tirelessly to keep the project moving, and many businesses donated materials and labor to keep us from going further into financial debt.

While great effort has been made to fundraise the project via online donations, event sponsorships, and grant proposals, we are far short on the monies needed to pay for this building. On top of the operating expenses of 2 buildings, we now have a substantial mortgage. If you, or someone you know, would like to donate to help lower that debt, your post would greatly appreciate it. Tax letters can be prepared. We are a 501(c)19, but we can accept 501(c)3 donations via a VFW Foundation pass-through.

Donations can also be mailed to the post:

VFW Post 5923
Attention: New Building Fund
PO Box 407

The post is a 501(c)19; donation receipts are available upon request. 501(c)3 donations can be via the VFW Foundation.

I had a great friend tell me to stop feeling sorry for my VFW, to quit telling people how your VFW got screwed over. He said people know that but they don't know why they should care. Some of you may be tired of hearing about it, and I do admit trying to fix the problem is an obsession. I would like to explain why it matters so much to me, and why I think it would matter to you.
The new building is necessary. Our old building is a money pit to maintain, heat, and cool. The space isn't big enough to house both bingo and larger events like fundraisers. Bingo is currently our only revenue source.
The building means great opportunities to bring people together, and it also means an additional revenue source. Revenue is a funny word to use because the post doesn't profit. Every penny we get we spend to make the post better, or donate to veterans and the community.
Now to the more personal stuff, the veteran like me needs other sheepdogs. We have friends and family, but there is something different about the bond of veterans. People use the words brotherhood, family, and camaraderie but what it really is to me is comfort, familiarity, and security. When you go to war, you have to depend on those around you constantly, and when you come back you miss having those people there and you miss being there for those people. The VFW gives me that, from the World War II veteran that treats me as his equal to the fellow Iraqi vet that knows what it's like to think for 365 days that you probably wouldn't come home alive.
As a former combat medic that has ran to the yell of "medic", it stays with you forever. You always have a need to help and to fix the situation, and you crave to be needed. The building finances and the members of the VFW are my wounded, and I must do all I can to help.
If you donate or buy materials for the VFW to finish the project, please don't think of it as buying a veteran bar. Yes we will have a bar. The bar will help us create revenue and that revenue will do real good for veterans and the community.
VFW money is spent on having very qualified veteran advocates in the VA medical claims process; literally at the VA Hospital. Our post regularly sends money to fund Veterans Homes, because federal and state funding doesn't do enough for our elders and disabled. We financially support the national VFW programs such as the VFW National Home for Children. We give scholarships and we actively participate in the schools. When a local veteran can't afford electricity, gas, food, etc. when go pay his or her electric bill; this happens more than you would want to know. We donate to other veteran organizations and community non-profits. The new building is going to allow us to hold events to do even more than this, to do things like raise awareness of the veteran suicide epidemic and homeless veteran crisis.
I am sure I missed many other great things every VFW does or strives to do. In the military we have a term, "having each other's 6", which is to watch and have each other's back, your 6 o'clock. I ask that today you have my VFW's "6". Can you donate $6 or more dollars so we can get this wonderfully powerful building open? So we can bring more veterans and the community together to support each other and make your world better. We hope to be an example for VFWs across America, that now is the time to grow and do more. Please share this message of hope with your friends. Message me or contact us via for info on donating materials, or mailing donations. Thank you for supporting veterans in our efforts to do good for others.

Things have gotten worse for our awesome group of veterans. The bank says we don't have enough money to finish the new VFW post as planned. I know I have already asked, and many of you have helped but we really need this to go viral and save this great project. Donate AND share please!!!
