Camden's Hearing Aid

Camden Albert Baum is 11 months old. He loves playing soccer, giving kisses, eating avocados and watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He is a sweet and happy little boy.
Camden was born June 3, 2016 with a congenital deformity where the external ear is underdeveloped causing hearing loss. This condition is called Microtia. Microtia occurs in 1 out of 8,000-10,000 births.
Camden is in need of a bone conduction unilateral hearing aid that is not covered by his insurance. This hearing aid costs $10,000.00 and will need to be replaced in five years as he develops.
A child with unilateral hearing loss may have trouble finding where sounds come from. This skill is known as localization and is important when listening in groups of people. The importance of this skill is not only so they can determine who is talking to them but is detrimental for their safety. If a child is near a street, riding a bike, or playing, he or she may have trouble localizing a horn or moving vehicle.
The first three years of life are considered the "critical period" for language development. This hearing device will help Camden develop speech and language skills and will ease his struggle to hear and understand language.
Camden's parents, Ann Marie and Brennan, have been working hard over the past 11 months with specialist and teachers to help with his development thus far. As his birthday approaches however, it becomes more important that he is fitted for this type of hearing aid.
As close friends of the Baum family we would like to make this a reality for Camden. Our goal is to give him the best gift we can for his 1st birthday...the ability to hear in his right ear. We all take hearing for granted on a daily basis but for Camden this will be life changing.
