Hi everybody! My name is Camber Calderwood and I just finished my first semester at Whittier College in Southern California. I graduated high school with Honors and a 3.8 GPA, but It wasn't always easy.
In 2008, I got diagnosed with Dystonia on my right arm. Later on my parents and I found out that the dystonia affects the entire right side of my body. Dystonia is when the cells in the brain misfire, causing parts of the body to spasm. In July of 2009 after I had a brain bleed, I got diagnosed with an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM).
Because of the placement of the AVM, I had to have 5 rounds of radiation in 2009, another 5 rounds in 2013, and 1 more round this past August. Because of the AVM, I have aphasia as well. This means that I have trouble with speech or understanding some words. I have gone through CT scans, MRI's and angiograms as well as the radiation treatment.
I can't really play sport or do most physical activities, but that hasn't stopped me. I was accepted to 7 out of 9 colleges and have been working very hard to maintain a good GPA.
The medical bills have been a major load, both mentally and financially, on my parents. They started two small college funds for me, but due to the medical bills, they couldn't contribute as much as I needed. I did receive a generous scholarship from Whittier, and with it I can pay part of my tuition each year. With the help of my parents and my two college funds, I was able to pay for almost all of my first year. I did have to take out a small student loan to pay the rest.
Now I need help in paying for my remaining years at college. The reason why I chose Whittier was because it suited my needs as a disabled student. I wanted to be on a small campus with a small student to staff ratio so that the staff can help me one on one. If I was on a larger campus, I wouldn't have been able to function as well.
