Cahaya Orphanage, Borobudur

My name is Harun Rabbani and I am a mentor, creator of UnTangled FM and I am a change-maker. I've been working in the field of personal and global transformation since 1998.

On 25th October 2010, Mount Merapi , which is situated near the village of Borobudur in Indonesia, erupted three times. The volcanoe continued bellowing our ash and lava until 30th November 2010. In that time, 350,000 people were evacuated and 353 people lost their lives.

By the time I arrive in Borobudur in December 2010 with a group of people on a personal transformation course, the devastation was very apparent.

The plumes of ash cloud and pyroplastic devastated the local economy and claimed 353 lives, not to mentioned burnt and injured many more. Many children were orphaned. Some of them were barely toddlers. The only place for them were orphanages of which we have been intermittently supporting Cahaya Orphanage in the centre of Borobudur.

Little did I know, my life would be changed forever. Our tour guide, Joko, introduced us to his children, Jordin and Tiffany. However, because he was on such a low income, he could not feed, clothe or educate his children. Cahaya Orphanage kindly agreed take care of his children for him.

When I visited the orphanage, I was surprised and shocked at how little they have to survive on. This included teenage boys sharing shoes and clothing, using their school assembly hall as a dining hall, sports hall and make shift bedroom.

I was surprised because, given how little they had and how their parents were 'taken' from them, they were all smiling and welcoming.

Since 2011, I have been supporting them in my own humble way. Unfortunately, they rely completely on private donations. These donations barely provide survival needs. Furthermore, despite being established since 2006, the children share beds and in one house alone, 30 children sleep in four medium size rooms.

Phase one of our project is to raise enough money for them to extend that building so that they can several more larger rooms. The total amount is £56,000. However, should we raise more money, we will use the excess to feed and clothe the children properly.

During the building phase, I will be flying over to create a video to share their progress. We will create a short documentary for the entire project, which will be available on our UnTangled FM website and our UnTangled TV YouTube page.

Here's 24-minutes short documentary I made when I visited Cahaya Orphanage in August 2016:

By contributing to this project, you are saving the lives of 154 children. I thank you in advance for all your contribution and support.

Warm wishes,
