Café Zippy is in a tight spot.

Cafe Zippy is an award-winning safe space for young people! This beloved downtown hub is well-known for supporting local artists, musicians, and poets, as well as offering sustainable, gluten-free, vegan and raw dining options. Some of our accomplishments include the KSER Community Award, The Everett Mayor's Award for Supporting the Arts, a featured cafe on Uber Eats as one of the healthy food choices in Everett, plus multiple features in the Everett Herald.

Sadly, our building has new owners who have raised our rent beyond what we can afford. Our current lease expires in 7 weeks but are excited to say that we have found a new space within 1 mile of our present location. We are very fortinate to score a great deal for rent at the new location.  Unfortunately, we do not have enough funds to cover the costs of moving in the time given, along with promoting our new location. The Everett community has been a source of unparalleled support in our mission to foster an interactive hub for alternative lifestyles, sustainable practices, and supporting the local art community. We are looking to the community to help us with this transition.

Cafe Zippy was first founded at Zippy's Java Lounge in 2005 at our old location on Hewitt and Rockefeller - named after a beloved Everett celebrity, Zippy the Dalmatian. The owner, Marilyn Rosenberg, had moved up here from Seattle to create a community hub after failing to find the same community she had grown fond of when working at Pike Place Market. Her ultimate goal was and always has been to create a safe space for expression of creativity and alternative, sustainable lifestyles. In 2008 she decided to make healthy eating a priority at her cafe after being diagnosed with a rare cancer disorder. Since adopting a raw/vegan diet she has circumvented the need for extensive surgeries that her condition would otherwise necessitate. Since then, the cafe has been the definitive source of locally- and sustainably-sourced menu options, including vegan, raw, and gluten-free options with a menu that's under $10.

In 2011 Zippy's Java Lounge moved to its current location on Wetmore and California and was renamed Cafe Zippy. Keeping true to its namesake Marilyn's Dalmatian, Zippy, was a frequent resident of the cafe where he would often make the rounds and greet his guests. When Zippy passed away in September 2015 a community memorial was held where the community turned out to share their memories, poetry, and music for Zippy. This cafe is one that has touched lives and brought people together whether it's for good coffee, local artwork, poetry, clean food, or some dog therapy.

Additionally, to practice what we preach and continue to amplify the community atmosphere of this cafe we are transitioning our business model into a cooperative format so that our wonderful customers can have a direct role in supporting and shaping the way we do business. As we move closer to this goal Cafe Zippy will cease to be a traditional pryamid-structured business and will instead be one where consumer-members, its workers, and other community members will be able to vote and direct the way business is conducted. We will utilize our community to implement social initiatives such as vocational training for at-risk youth, fundraising for local charities, and continuing to support our local producers, artists, and musicians. This vision of a cooperative community stands to be lost if we cannot raise the necessary funds to move.
