Cabins and Bathhouses Renovation

Tax deductible
For many of us, the Cabins became our homes away from home while we were students at Woolman. These cabins saw us in tears, song, and laughter, sheltered us through late night conversations and through looming academic deadlines, and fostered deep and meaningful
connections with our roommates. Many of us looked forward to returning “home” after wilderness and service-learning trips, or even after semester breaks, returning to campus, building a fire in the winter months, and settling back in at Woolman.

Please consider donating to the Woolman Cabin Area Restoration Fund to ensure that these cabins can continue being homes away from home for future generations of young people.

As many of you know, Woolman is in a time of transition. This past August, we suspended The Woolman Semester School after it became clear that we couldn’t continue to offer the high quality and enriching high school semester program that many of us treasured. We are, however, committed to continuing to offer the Woolman experience to young people for years and decades to come. To this end, we have engaged in a discernment process to vision the future of our school and center.

This spring, we will be partnering with a local nonprofit, Sierra Streams Institute, to pilot The Woolman Outdoor School. Eighty middle school students from Oakland will come to campus for three days in May and soak in our land, exploring macro invertebrates at the pond, making manzanita berry cider in the kitchen, and swinging on the rope swing by the soccer field. Next year, we will be expanding this program to 3-4 additional Bay Area schools, with a full program launch in the 2018-19 academic year. All of these students, albeit briefly, will get to experience what it is like to call the Woolman cabins home.

We are also laying the groundwork to launch The Woolman School for Nonviolence. We will be collaborating with other nonprofits doing restorative justice work with youth and youth allies, and we will be offering our center as a base for groups to engage in this work. In these challenging political times, we see this work as critical, and we are looking forward to supporting it in this way. Stay tuned for more details about this new program as we continue to lay its foundation.

Campus is gearing up for the 13th season of Camp Woolman.  Many of us either were campers at Camp Woolman or were counselors or support staff for the program. For those who experienced Camp first-hand, you know that many of the values and practices that were integral to the school run deep at Camp Woolman. Campers and counselors sleep in the Cabins, enjoying their insulated walls which keep the nights’ cool air in throughout the hot days, and calling the cabins home.

As alumni, we can make a difference in this critical juncture in Woolman’s history. We are raising funds to paint and re-floor the West Side Cabins, re-roof the A-frames, and completely renovate both Bathhouses. Please give as generously as you can to the Cabin Area Restoration Fund or to our AnnualFund. Thank you!
