For those of you who don't already know our story, 2019 has been a year of miracles and tragedy. After 5 1/2 years of struggling through infertility, we became pregnant with our twin boys through IVF in February. Although twin pregnancies are labeled as "high risk" and closely monitored, everything was progressing perfectly and the boys were as healthy as they could be. On Father's Day everything changed. Katie started having strong contractions in the afternoon and as we were heading out the door to meet our doctor at the hospital, her water broke. At the hospital, they found that the umbilical cord for twin "A" (Henry) had badly prolapsed and he basically had no chance of survival due to being cut off from that life source. Since they were fraternal twins, Jack had his own separate water sac and that seemed to be intact. However, at only 20 weeks gestation, they were unable to administer anything to stop labor or resuscitate the babies if they were born. The doctors prepared us for the fact that when Katie delivered Henry, they would not be able to stop Jack from being born too and they would not be able to save him.

That night, Henry passed away and the doctor confirmed Monday morning by ultrasound. We were transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center while Katie continued to labor throughout the day. Tuesday morning at 9:11am, Henry was born. Amazingly, the high risk team of doctors had just stepped into the room to discuss moving forward. Even more amazing, as soon as Henry was delivered, labor immediately stopped. Even after 2 days of contractions and with no interventions from the doctors, it all just stopped and Jack stayed put. It's a miracle the doctors can't explain, but we know came straight from God.

We got to spend a couple days with sweet Henry. He was 10.5oz, 12" long, and perfectly formed. We are so thankful to our church family for covering the cemetery and mortuary expenses. He is buried at Hillside Memorial in Redlands, near his Great-Grandma Iris.

After 1 week in the hospital, Katie was discharged to stay 3 weeks at the Ronald McDonald House across the street before being readmitted at 24 weeks. She has currently been back at Loma Linda for the past 2 weeks, and the hope is that she will remain stable for the next 2 months. At 34 weeks gestation, they will induce labor and we'll meet our little Jack-Jack!

Due to the unexpected loss of our son and continued risks for the remainder of the pregnancy with Jack, we are asking for help as we move forward. We are so thankful for the practical help that so many friends and family have provided already. At this point, Katie has all the books, activities, and magazines she needs to fill time while in the hospital. She is also on a strict diet due to being diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, so meals are covered as well. Specifically, we are looking for help in covering Katie's loss of income for the months in the hospital, medical expenses, finishing building Jack's nursery, and grief counseling.

Most of all we need continued prayer. Jack has remained stable and healthy, but there is still a long way to go. We also need prayer as we grieve for Henry, hope for Jack, and struggle through this long season of hospital bed rest. Thank you!
