How to Help Those Impacted by the US Government Shutdown

The government shutdown that started on December 22 thankfully came to end on January 25. While the shutdown is over, the impact of may continue. Furloughed workers have yet to receive a paycheck, and government contract workers may not receive back pay.

In response to this crisis, earlier this month GoFundMe and Deepak Chopra started a fundraiser to support several nonprofit organizations across the country offering direct assistance to government workers. This campaign has already distributed the money to the nonprofits and we will continue accepting donations in the coming days until paychecks are issued again.

In addition to the fundraiser started by GoFundMe and Chopra, thousands of individuals have started campaigns to help with their rent, groceries, and other critical resources. To help those impacted by the shutdown, you can donate to one of the many verified GoFundMe campaigns below.

GoFundMe has a dedicated Trust & Safety team reviewing all campaigns related to the government shutdown. We deploy proprietary technical tools and have multiple processes in place to verify the identity of campaign organizers and the beneficiary of the campaign. Before money is transferred, an individual’s information, including their banking information, must be verified by our payment processor.

On GoFundMe, you’re covered by the first and only donor protection guarantee: the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee. We guarantee you a full refund in the rare case something isn’t right.
