Students Helping Honduras

Last year I went to Honduras with a great group of Boston College students to build a school with community members. This trip had such a large impact on my outlook on life and the ways in which I can give back. I am fundraising for my flight and expenses for this trip again this year! I unfortunately do not have the means to make it to Honduras without your help. Any and all donations would be appreciated. This year I will be going back to Honduras and back to the same site that I helped work on last year. I will have the opportunity to continue and finish building a school with some community members that I met on my first trip! 

Students Helping Honduras is an organization with a goal to assist Honduran leaders in their community to help create opportunities for Hondurans to decrease violence and poverty and brign education to the forefront of problems to solve. To do this volunteers go to a community and meet with community members. We make bonds by learning spanish words or being taught a trade and these families invite us into their homes and spend time with us. We then build a school with community memebers. Building a school within a community can benefit the safety and education of the children within the community. Walking long distances to school puts children in harms way, allowing for kidnapping and gang violence or intimidation. Parents often pull their children out of school for fear of their safety.

Meeting the community members and working besides them created a comfortable and mutualistic relationship. As students and volunteers we learn how to appreciate the opportunity to help others without making others feel as though we are higher than them. We go to Honduras to provide assistance that they want and not what we think is best for them because we do not live in their shoes. In return these communities receive help, friendships, and the chance to make their space a better place.
