Building for the future in Nepal

Donation protected
Our names are Andrew Fry & Simone Griffith, We have been involved in a school in Nepal. The school is located in Maga-pauwa which has two severely damaged buildings.

We visited the school in September 2015 a few months after the earthquake which had devasted the older buildings of the school which included classrooms, library, staff quarters and administration buildings.

We travelled to this region as Simone had been involved a few years earlier with this same school, and we wanted to continue to support the same community where a relationship had already been formed.

To date we have already repaired one building, installed steps around the school, installed new soccer goals, provided school bags, calculators, pens and pencils and 8 new soccer balls.  Simone, a teacher, has offered many hours of teacher training to the teachers of the school.  We are also in the process of building two new table tennis tables out of concrete. They love playing between classes and the old tables recently broke after many years of enjoyment.

There are two buildings that need to be pulled down and rebuilt. The new building will have strip footings and reo bar coming out of the footings into the brick blocks which will be core filled with concrete. This will make the building more structurally sound than the original buildings.

Andrew will complete  a self-funded trip in November to the school to work with the builders and school on a plan to tackle the construction process. I'll be proposing we build single story buildings rather than double story. This is to ensure that the buildings are less affected by any future  earthquakes. Single story buildings can also be built faster and it is safer throughout the building process.

We aim to faciliate the building process and prefer not to complete work directly which  could replace the opportunity to hire Nepalese locals, thus continuing to help families in the community.  We also encourage the school and community to seek funding from the government to help contribute to all projects.

We are hoping to start contsruction once demolition is completed. The new buildings should be started in January.  Although there is something called 'Nepali time'!!

Maga-Pauwa, is not far from Kathmandu, however due to poor roads and access it is an 8-hour drive over 100km in length. The school has a poor access track for the final 8km, which puts this school out of reach for proper funding and repairs. The school holds 250 students.

They are the most resilient people I have ever met and enjoy the simple things in life, which we, as westerners forget how lucky we have it in our land of free opportunity.

Here are the senior students having morning assembly.

If I’m able to raise enough money for the two buildings to be built, the school could run at 100% capacity.

We will be thankful to see the kids learning in a safe environment.

This is the first time we're trying the go fund me page, if this works well, we'll be helping more schools in Nepal in the near future.
