Two months ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Ghana to work in a for-purpose initiative called Financieros sin Fronteras (Financiers without Borders) to offer consulting services to struggling Microfinance institutions who fight poverty through financial inclusion. As we traveled the country, we visited different villages that were mostly in unimaginable precarious conditions; however, optimism and hospitality were always present. When we arrived to Larabanga, a village in the northern part of Ghana, many members of the community, children and adults, happily approached us to warmly welcome us and show us around the village.
A young man approached me and said, “Hi, what is your name?” I told him and asked him his, he replied “I am Issak, can we be friends?” – with a smile I agreed. He took out a piece of paper and a pencil out of his pocket and asked for my phone number and email. Before leaving he asked me if we could take a picture, he rushed to get a cellphone, took the picture and with a smile he shook my hand goodbye. After leaving the village, I couldn’t stop thinking about this village and its people. I was impacted by the conditions in which they lived, and how, regardless of the situation, they managed to always have a smile on their face.
A couple of days later I received a text and to my surprise it was Issak. He sent me the picture we had taken. After the trip we continued to share occasional messages, he told me he is a school teacher in the village and shared how they lacked classroom space and were currently having trouble finishing some classrooms. The people in the village are building the classrooms themselves but need raw materials and school materials for its completion. I felt the need to help and tried to contact education NGOs in Ghana but got no response. Then I realized that I had all the means available to raise the funds that Issak and the village need to complete the classrooms. I promisedIsaak to try to help as much as I could, he told me the village and the children are really excited for the support coming. Please join me to support this young professor and more than 60 children to receive the education they all deserve.

Hace dos meses, tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Ghana con Financieros sin Fronteras, una iniciativa sin fines de lucro, para trabajar en un proyecto ofreciendo servicios de consultoría a instituciones de microfinancieras que luchan contra la pobreza a través de la inclusión financiera. Mientras viajábamos por el país, visitamos diferentes aldeas que en su mayoría se encuentran en condiciones precarias; sin embargo, el optimismo y la hospitalidad estuvieron siempre presentes. Cuando llegamos a Laribanga, una aldea en la parte norte de Ghana, muchos miembros de la comunidad, niños y adultos se nos acercaron alegremente para darnos la bienvenida y mostrarnos el pueblo.
Un joven se me acercó y me dijo: "Hola, ¿cómo te llamas?", le respondí y me contestó: "Soy Issak, ¿quieres ser mi amigo?" y con una sonrisa, acepté. Sacó un pedazo de papel y un lápiz de su bolsillo y me pidió mi número de teléfono y correo electrónico. Antes de partir, me preguntó si nos podíamos tomar una foto, corriendo fue por un teléfono celular, tomó la foto y con una sonrisa nos despedimos. Después de partir de Larabanga, no podía dejar de pensar en el lugar y su gente. Me impactaron las condiciones en que viven y cómo, a pesar de su situación, logran tener siempre una sonrisa en su rostro.
Un par de días después recibí un mensaje de texto y, para mi sorpresa, era Issak. Me envió la foto que nos habíamos tomado. Después del viaje, continuamos compartiendo mensajes ocasionales, él me contó que es un maestro de escuela en la aldea, pero que les faltaba espacio en las aulas de clases y que actualmente tienen problemas para terminar algunas aulas. Los miembros en el pueblo están construyendo las aulas por sí mismos, pero necesitan materias primas y materiales escolares para su finalización. Sentí la necesidad de ayudar y traté de contactar a las ONGs en Ghana, pero no obtuve respuesta. Luego me di cuenta de que tenía todos los medios disponibles para recaudar los fondos que Isaak y el pueblo necesitan para completar las aulas. Le prometí a Issak que intentaría ayudar tanto como pudiera, él me dijo que el pueblo y los niños están muy entusiasmados por el apoyo que juntos les daremos. Únete mí para apoyar a este joven profesor y a más de 60 niños para recibir la educación que todos merecemos.
