Hi everyone, thanks for visiting my go fund me page!
I will be travelling to Malawi for a month-long volunteering trip this July, along with 11 other optometry students and 3 qualified supervisors. During our time out there, we plan to provide free eye care, refractions and supply suitable glasses free of charge to as much of the local community as possible. We will also be teaching other students in local universities and hospitals by providing tutorials on basic eye care and demonstrations of essential equipment. As well as this we will be referring people for cataract surgeries that have been fundraised for already. We will be travelling around the country doing the majority of our work in Lilongwi, Mangochi, Chitipa and Blantyre.
With the aim to see 2000-3000 patients during the month we believe we have the potential to make a huge difference in a country that has very little access to eye care. The leading cause of visual impairment in Malawi is uncorrected refractive error which can be cured simply with a suitable pair of glasses- something that many of us take for granted! This small change can allow children to participate in school and adults to work to provide for their family.
As a group of self-funding volunteers, we are fundraising for costs such as purchasing spectacles to bring with us, essential equipment, accommodation and travel when we arrive. The team needs to raise a total of £9000 to fund this trip so if you would like to support us in any way the we would be very grateful. Any donation, no matter how small will help us to dramatically improve peoples lives, allowing them to become an independent individual within their community. We will also donate hats, clothes, sunglasses and any leftover spectacles to the local communities and hospitals at the end of our trip.
