BSA Eagle Project for Mass Audubon Society
Hi. My name is Alex Williams. I am a LIfe Scout from Lexington Massachusetts working on my Eagle Project. I am raising funds to build 20 bluebird nesting boxes for the Mass Audubon Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary.
Cavity nesting birds such as the Eastern Bluebird need places like dead trees with cavities in order to build their nests and raise their young. In urban and suburban environments there is a lack of habitat for these species because dead trees are often taken down. The Mass Audubon Habitat Education center creates opportunities for these species to nest by deploying nesting boxes (bird houses) in their wildlife sanctuary in Massachusetts. I have included their website here: https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/habitat
Many of the existing white pine nesting boxes have been in use for years and are suffering from decay. No preservatives or chemicals can be used to preserve the wood for the health of the birds. These new nesting boxes will be constructed using cedar and brass hardware and will hopefully enjoy a long life. This project must be completed by the end of February 2019.
Your help will be gratefully received by me, the Audubon Society and the baby birds!!
