To the Airline Professionals Association Members,

As members of Local 1224 we are bound together in so many ways.  We come together because we firmly understand that together we are stronger than the sum of each piece.  We often think of this in our professional lives, but it also applies to our personal lives.  When tragedy strikes one of us the rest of us can help alleviate, at least a small measure, the impact of that calamity.  It is in this vein that I bring the following to your attention.

Some of you know that Silver Airways Executive Council Chairman Richard Green has been battling cancer for the past few years.  Richard has aggressively fought this disease through multiple surgeries and chemotherapy.  Regrettably, his Stage 4 Colon Cancer has spread and grown multiple times despite undergoing prolonged chemotherapy to beat back its growth and spread. His specific cancer only responds genetically to one specific chemotherapy. Sadly, this chemotherapy is only effective for a limited time at battling the tumors. At this point the chemotherapy is no longer viable in stopping the tumors and is only effective at slowing tumor growth.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Richard has continued to represent his membership and the Local as the Silver Airways Executive Council Chairman. Richard has provided stable leadership to his membership, the union volunteers and to Silver’s management at an airline that has a great deal of turnover and inherent instability.  He has continued to constantly make himself available to his members and the Local even as he has endured several invasive surgeries and an aggressive chemotherapy regiment.  Richard was instrumental in achieving a new collective bargaining agreement at Silver earlier this year, no insignificant accomplishment in the environment we find ourselves.

Richard has worked tirelessly for the 10 plus years he has represented the members. However, he has had to start to slow down and after consultation with both his oncologist and family he has been told to look at his “bucket list” and to start tackling the larger items as his condition will continue a (hopefully slow) decline into the future.

Currently Richard has no intention to resign his union position or reduce the support he provides for the members and the Local as this dedication to service provides him a sense of purpose in the very difficult situation he finds himself.

The last few years have been exceedingly difficult for Richard physically, mentally, and financially. The demands of his union responsibilities, (Silver is a small airline and usually the union leadership has consisted of 3 or 4 volunteers), his treatments and surgeries, and the age of his children have limited his ability to get away with his family, not to mention the financial constraints.

Out of compassion and thanks we are asking for your help to provide help to Richard and his family so they can try and enjoy the peak of his remaining time. His medical expenses have taken their toll on any savings Richard and his family were able to accumulate. Your assistance will help Richard and his family make a few trips and many great memories for his wife Jennifer and his two children, Paige (12) and Peyton (6).

This is an opportunity for us to pay it forward to someone who has done so much,  showing what being a union member and leader is all about.  With over 2000 members in Local 1224, a little generosity from everyone could go a long way in blessing this family.
