Watch out, na! Catfish here. Good people, The Mad Dog No Good has been busy since we released our EP Let’s Make Out To Otis Redding in 2012. We've released two singles, (“Spring ” and “Ain’t Never Had A Good Time,”) that have received great local reception (thanks WTMD!), were named among the “Best In Baltimore” in the Baltimore City Paper, opened for acts like Rebirth Brass Band, toured the North east, played the main stage at Artscape and played “Concert For The Chesapeake”  on PBS. I also launched a homemade ever-growing song collection called The Songster Part 2, started writing and singing with LaFayette Gilchrist, and served a Maryland Traditions apprenticeship under The Great Wendell Holmes of The Holmes Brothers. He and I did an interview, on WYPR’s The Signal, that I now hold dear since he has passed. It hurts more than a little bit to tell you that, but I am happy to tell you that since his and drummer Popsy Dixon’s passing, Eric Kennedy and I have joined Sherman Holmes to keep The Holmes Brothers legacy alive. Boy, I can’t tell you what this experience has done for me, except that their wisdom and belief in my potential has been inspiring and plenty crucial.

So then, it’s about time for an album. Wouldn’t you say?

Well, Ol’ Catfish and them got one for you, but we need help getting it to you. Catfish need some money, honey! Our debut album will be a sweet and scrappy slice of rock & soul called Mannish Boys, (kinda like that Muddy Waters tune we play.) The songwriting builds on the theme of hypermasculinity found in certain songs on the EP. We’re going to take some of the songs from Let’s Make Out to Otis Redding, add our singles, shine ‘em up a bit (not too much, of course) and add 7 brand-spankin fresh-out-the-oven tracks. And I'll just say right now, I have a good feeling about this.

Will it take us around the world and get us that reality show on MTV2 we always dreamed of? Who can say? But, you know when you’re cooking for people and you’re adding spices, and all the flavors are coming together and hitting your nose real good, and you just know it smells good to you and you just have this feeling that somebody out in that dining room is really going to enjoy this meal? That’s how I feel. People, I can smell it.

One thing about this meal though. Some songs are a little spicy, lyrically. Without getting too uppity about it, everything on Mannish Boys has definite artistic purpose. Still, and I know for sure I’m talking to some family members, you might not get down with everything. Yea, there’s some right cussin’. But also some folks, for one reason or another, just aren’t so nice and maybe they can’t even see or hear themselves enough to know that and so I’m interested in those folks. Aren’t you? Haven’t you ever been one of those folks? Anyway, I surely appreciate every donation of support; that’s just some stuff I thought you should know before you donate.

Musically, you know how we do this thing here. (If you don’t, just head to www.BrooksLong.com.) Give me that old-time religion. It’s good enough for me. Rock & Roll. You know, like back when James Brown and The Supremes were called Rock & Roll, too. Back when all  playing the blues meant was that you were playing to the 30-and-over crowd. Back when art was an incidental product of having fun. And Ol’ Catfish must lament that there’s such a serious aspect to this project.

I don’t know about you folks, but I love those old songs that ran on pure fun. (Of course, they still make that stuff now, but I’m talking about this old stuff.) I promise if you help make this one a success, on the next one, I’ll try and throw the best damn party you ever heard. I’ve got the next batch marinating right now. “If I live and nothin' don’t happen,” as Great-Grandma would say.

But the 2nd, 3rd and 10th albums can't come before Numero Uno. Mannish Boys sets the tone. Mannish Boys lays the foundation. So here are the things I promise I’ll do for you if you can help Mannish Boys grow:
