Brook Waddle was a vibrant teen with her life ahead of her. At 17 she was a senior in high school and had just been home-coming queen; she played volleyball, basketball, and threw discus for track and field; she was also on her schools cheerleading squad. Brook along with her friends were looking forward to their final year of high school and graduation, getting out in the world to explore what is there beyond the school doors.
However, one fateful day just a few weeks into her senior year her life changed forever. She was a passenger in a vehicle with two other friends driving to their school in anticipation of going to a football game where she would be cheerleading. The three girls didn’t make it back to the school as they had an accident. Brook was the only one in the car that was seat belted and the only one injured. She suffered fractures at C4, C5, and C6 in her neck paralyzing her for the rest of her life.
Brook spent from September 2, 2005- May 11, 2007 in the hospital. And still today must make quarterly visits to the hospital for check-ups. Unable to talk due to complications from a tracheotomy that still exists, she can only communicate in a whisper. Her mother has learned how to read lips so that she knows what Brook is saying to her. Her Doctors have ordered around the clock care, but because of financial limitations and the fact that the state won’t cover it she doesn’t receive that care. Brooks mother by profession is a pharmacist but because of the lack of nursing care available for her daughter, had to give up her position because her employer at the time couldn’t accommodate the schedule that was needed for her to be home with Brook when needed. Mrs. Waddle took another job, paying much less which added to the financial stress. She is the primary care provider for Brook because the state only allows 70 hours a week for care instead of the round the clock care that she needs. http://www.thestate.com/living/article116185593.html
I had the pleasure of meeting Brook and her mother just a few months ago and was able to spend the entire day with them. Through conversation found people have forgotten that beyond the accident and long hospital stay there is girl that has grown into a woman unable to experience the world as she expected to.
Brook’s primary contact with the outside world is through the internet and online friends that she develops. That is how I met her and learned of her situation. She doesn’t ask for sympathy or anything, all she asks is for friendship. She chats and plays games using a specially designed computer; which is where she spends most of her free time because the visitors that she gets are few and far between.
Mrs. Waddle is struggling to keep Brook at home where she wants to be instead of institutionalized where she would be cut off from so much more than she is currently. But it is getting much more difficult to do. Brook needs a van that can accommodate her height so that she can be more easily transported to her appointments. Brooks bed has an air mattress to help prevent bed sores, but she needs a low air loss mattress that is also long enough to accommodate her height. They also need a service animal that could accompany Brook making her feel more secure to get out a bit more.
But more importantly right now as of this date 12/9/2017 Brook is in the hospital with yet another fight. On November 27th she suffered a seizure and developed pneumonia. Brook is currently in the hospital in a semi-coma. Mrs. Waddle is not able to work as she normally would right now and the regular day to day bills such as mortgage, electric, car payments, and insurance etc. along with the medical bills that are mounting it is becoming a bit overwhelming for them. There is so much need here for these two women.
I’m asking for those that may be friends, family or even strangers to reach out and help, if even one dollar is donated. There is no donation that is to small, and even if you can’t donate please post this on your wall so that we can pass this along, and please let’s all say a prayer for this young woman who is still fighting for her life and her mother who is staying at her daughter’s side.
