Bringing Pride to Southend

Donation protected
Southend Pride is a local voluntary organisation which is looking to bring Pride to Southend and to celebrate and promote our diverse LGBT+ community in Southend.

In 2016, 92,000 people over 16 living in the East of England identified themselves as from the LGBT+ community (ONS, 2016). To celebrate Pride Southend’s LGBT+ community they have to travel over 20 miles away to Chelmsford, London or Brighton. Southend Pride will make pride accessible to the growing LGBT+ community in Southend.

Now is the right time for Southend to have its own Pride event, to celebrate the town's diversity, bring our own LGBT+ community together locally, be visible, and promote positive relations with the wider community. Pride week will be 14th to 21st July, culminating in a High Street parade on the closing day.

The events will be LGBT+ themed but open and inclusive to all, held in various venues across the town; and diverse in range, including music film, arts and comedy. The parade day will feature stalls run by community groups and organisations, to raise awareness of services and support available to the LGBT+ community. Events will be open to all and include an opening event focused on LGBT music, and a LGBT+ film screening and discussion panel, a talent show showcasing local talent and spoken word and poetry evening. There will be LGBT+ Art Murals in central Southend and Pride Flags distributed to shops to display their support.
