Meet Courtney Austin, a very fun outgoing soccer player from Dallas, TX. At the young age of 10 years old, Courtney was diagnosed with the disease that most called the silent disease Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. During the past 5 years Courtney has undergone treatment for low glucose levels, kidney malfunctions, and other diabetic related issues that continue to attack her young body.
A few months ago, Courtney lost a dear friend that was her same age to the disease, which prompted her family to look for other options to help manage her diabetes. The effects of the disease became more real to the Austin's, and created a desire to find another tool that could potentially aid/save Courtney's life. The family came in contact with a non-profit Texas based program known as Drey's Alert Dogs (D.A.D). Courtney's family became intrigued with the organizations mission to help those who were diagnosed with diseases such as Type 1 diabetes. This could not have come at a more real time in their lives especially after Courtney lost her friend.
You may ask yourself: how can a service dog help patients with Type 1 diabetes? These amazing service animals can provide numerous benefits for patients like Courtney. They're trained to recognize and alert blood sugar changes both high and low up to 25 minutes in advance, dial 911 on a special K9 device, awaken another person for help, and retrieve essential medications.
Courtney was introduced to Diabetic Alert Dog, Bailey, and they became best pals from the moment of introduction. Her parents began raising money for 'Bailey' to become Courtney's Service Dog. We, at ProVest Insurance Group have dedicated ourselves to helping raise $500 that will go towards Courtney's family to help pay for a trained dog.
