As many of you know, on October 31, 2017, Paul suffered a severe spinal cord injury that has left him paralyzed from the chest down.  That same week his wife, Suzanne, was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It has been a long 18 months for Paul, Suzanne and their three boys.  During this period, Suzanne, has undergone extensive treatment and was recently determined to be cancer free.  Unfortunately, Paul has not regained his mobility and continues to be a quadriplegic.  After months of rehabilitation, Paul was transferred to a nursing home in Haarlem, Netherlands.  At 62 he is the youngest patient at the facility.  Although most people Paul's age would be depressed,  Paul continues to inspire all of us with his amazing positive attitude.  No matter what obstacle is placed in front of him he meets it head on.  He embodies our mom's favorite saying, "The same fire that melts butter, turns iron into steel."

Our goal now is to get Paul out of the nursing home and back home with Suzanne and their three boys: Etienne, Julian and Ryan. In order to achieve this goal, their home will have to undergo major renovations. As with most homes in the Netherlands space is a premium and their home, although very nice, is no exception.  Given Paul's limitations Paul will be unable to use the second and third floors.  Therefore, Paul's world will be limited to the first floor.  The renovations will involve opening the back of the house and extending a wing to a bedroom that will have to be built to accommodate a special bed and lift to get Paul in and out of his bed.  Construction costs in the Netherlands are quite high.  The costs that Paul and Suzanne will incur for the renovations and to allow Paul to live at home are $130,000.  The work will take a number of months, but is scheduled to be completed in July.
