Bring Chap Home Safely

Our neighbor, family member, friend & fellow musician Chap Ostrander has been hospitalized for the last 6 months due to an unexplained complete paralysis of his legs. He has been back and forth to Columbia University Medical Center in NYC and Kessler Rehabilitation in West Orange. The doctors have no answers as to why it happened or how to treat it.
The reality is this may be permanent and the impact of what lies ahead for Chap living with paralysis is real. Both Adrienne & Chap along with Liam and Wes are learning how to go forward in their lives together with this diagnosis. Bringing him home is the goal but bringing him home safely is the challenging part.
Adrienne has met with many professionals to help identify their needs in modifying the house for his care. Many kind people have volunteered there time to hopefully help make this possible. Through the help of an architect they have developed plans to convert the pantry on the main floor into a handicap accessible bathroom. This would help tremendously in his care because the dining area to the right is the best spot for the Hoyer Lift. For those of you that don't know what the Hoyer lift is, it is an assistive device that would allow Chap to be transferred between a bed and a chair because unfortunately he is unable to do this on his own. The entrance going into the main level will also need to be made accessible by means of a ramp or electric safety lift. As far as transportation goes the family van wil either need to be replaced or converted and Adrienne has already looked into a used vehicle.
A few of these costs can be met through insurance but many cannot. It is the hope that family and friends far and wide will find ways to support the financial impact this will bring.
Hopefully this gives everyone a clear picture of the many needs in order to bring Chap home safely. Adrienne says his release is soon and although they can extend that time a bit, home is where he'd really like to be.
