My mum and dad Cathie and Bill Rodgers decided to rent an apartment in Spain and the dream was to live a long and relaxing retirement life in the sunshine. However the dream was not to be. My mum Cathie was diagnosed with lung cancer whilst in Spain in late 2018 and the tumour was successfully removed in January this year. Whilst going through post operation chemotherapy she fell and broke her back. Whilst recovering from breaking her back she was diagnosed with a metastasis (secondary cancer) which the hospital in Spain said was operable. Following scans she had last week, we were given the devastating news that she has other tumours which are inoperable.
Mum is in excruciating pain. She has been in hospital for a month where she looks at four walls 24 hours a day. The TV does not have any English speaking channels and she has very limited visitors. We know that mum is possibly going to die (medically we have been told she has six months), but we cannot let that happen here in Spain who have a very different approach to pain control and palliative care. We need to get her into a hospice back in Scotland where firstly they can get her pain under control and she will have lots of visitors and stimulation to keep her going for as long as possible.
Mum’s tumours are in her back and neck making it impossible to sit upright on a normal flight and therefore we have to return on a special medical flight. We do not have the £17,000 for an air ambulance and therefore the only way this is possible is with help.
My mum Cathie has lived her life helping others - practically, financially and emotionally. As she approaches the end of her life please can family, friends and colleagues of the family help to ensure that her remaining time with us is peaceful and pain free.
