Red Earth Immersion - Brigidine
Donation protected
Brigidine students are travelling to Arnhem Land on 23 June - 1 July 2018. This enriching experience will enable students to: experience indigenous culture in a traditional way, make a meaningful contribution to the lives of others, and build an enduring connection to Indigenous Australia.
Whilst on Immersion, the students will participate in a project. The aim of the project is to build a self-sustaining vegetable garden in a remote community in Arnhem Land. There is no easy access to supermarkets or fresh produce in these remote communities.
The funds raised will go directly towards building a Community Vegetable Garden in Mamadewerre Homeland. This will include a fence, chicken coop and preparing the vegetable garden area.
Here are our hopes for the Immersion:
Olivia: My hope for the Immersion is to get out of my comfort zone and experience the Indigenous culture. I hope to connect with the Elders and gain a new understanding of who they are.
Maeve : I hope that during the Immersion in Arnhem Land I can come to truly know the Indigenous people and their land. I want to appreciate first hand the way the past and their traditional culture influence their lives. I hope to spend time together to show that Australia can be a connected country.
Eliza: My hope for the Immersion is to connect with the community and learn about their experiences. I hope to open my eyes to the way they live in remote communities and how privileged we are to visit this place and to make a difference in the lives of the people of Arnhem Land, and mine too.
Sarah: From the Immersion I hope that I can experience a new and different culture first hand and get to know the community. I also hope that through the project I can help the community and meet some new people along the way.
Eliza: My hope for the Immersion to Arnhem Land is that I come back with a new perspective on aboriginal culture. I want to not only understand but appreciate the beauty of aboriginal culture. I also hope to come back a better person. I want this experience to open my mind to what is around me and teach me to appreciate everything that I have.
The Red Earth Immersions connect students to remote Indigenous Australia.
