Brighter Berkshire a Year of Menal Health is an initiative driven by a group of passionate and committed people who care about mental health, work in mental health, have experienced mental health issues or who have been carers of people needing additional mental health support.

We want to make a real and positive difference to the mental health of people in Berkshire. If we succeed we will not only help people in Berkshire but we think our impact will be much wider.

The idea is that by having an initiative like this, it lends itselt to a much wider range of people will feel more able to talk about mental health and come together to help in a range of ways to raise awareness. These ideas, activities and events will be on the website so others might do the same.

1 in 4 people are affected by a mental health issue and the numbers of people who are known to services who go on to kill themselves in Berkshire rose considerably last year. Public services are being cut and struggling to help with the demand. People of all ages need support but because of stigma, don't seek it early enough and when they do, can't always access support thats right for them.

We will work with the BBC, local press, schools, colleges, universities, businesses, politicians, faith groups, minority groups, sport and the arts, other charities and programmes working int this area and make best use of our shared resources in tbhis concerted effort to get a much wider reach than before through activities under this initiative.

We already have ideas around school art projects being about mental health, colleges holding public exhibitions linked to mental health which showcase what students have developed. Sporting and music activities are also ideas being developed.

This will be a big inclusive conversation, developing a big inclusive network of people to really make the difference locally.

We will using the website, www.brighterberkshire.com speaking to people, sharing what others are doing to inspire others to get involved in anything that will help raise awareness.

We will work together as a big local community to make the difference needed on this issue.

The project is supported by a number of volunteers in terms of their time to speak to people and help co-ordinate and join up. However it is already becoming so big we need funding support with this. For example the planning event alone has within weeks registered 70 people from over 30 different organiations. Imagine the interest and reach when we go live.

The funds will go towards
Website development, updates and management
Project co-ordination, communication & administration
Social media campaign support
Development of Berkshire wide directory
Posters, leaflets, flyers, other
Sponsorship or management of awards
6 events across the year one in each council area
