Bread and Brotherhood Micro-Bakery Whitby
What is it?
For several years we, at the Esk Valley Camphill Community (EVCC), have wished for a small bakery which would provide work opportunities for our members, some of whom are learning disabled, and also promote a healthy bread culture. At the same time, James & Lucy from Common Cause Community Interest Company have been looking to bring locally baked organic bread to their not for profit shop, The Futurehealth Store in Whitby. Now we believe it is time to bring the project to life.
We are going to adapt a room in The Futurehealth Store, Whitby into a community Micro-Bakery. There will be a team of 3-4 people, some of whom are learning disabled, baking bread initially 2 days a week which will be sold in The Futurehealth Store and supplied to the EVCC households. The space will also be available for other activities like cooking and baking classes or community meals. It will allow the EVCC members to extend their social networks, learn and share skills. And of course, we will promote a healthy bread culture!
Micro-bakery is a gateway to professional baking – a small space adapted for baking which will allow us to bake 60 loaves of fresh bread per day with very low capital investment. And it is fairly easy to expand our production or even move to bigger premises if we wanted to in the future.
Who is involved?
This is a joint project of Esk Valley Camphill Community (EVCC) & Common Cause Community Interest Company. We, at Esk Valley Camphill Community live together and celebrate life together (learning disabled and non-learning-disabled members). We are keen to develop ways of working together for the benefit of the community.
James and Lucy, from Common Cause, are lifelong supporters of The Camphill Movement and are keen to develop initiatives which support not just physical health but emotional & community health too. Lukas, Ruairidh and Daniel are EVCC community members with many years of bread baking experience who are keen to get their hands-on baking again!
What do we need?
We have experienced people keen to work and learn new skills, we have premises, planning permission and we have customers. So, what is missing? Finances to start the project! We need £4000 to adapt the room for micro baking and we need another £4000 for basic equipment. This will be enough to get us started. Will you chip in?
Also, any funds donated over and above our initial target will be used to train new bakers from the EVCC community & potentially the local community in Whitby and also to improve our equipment & develop the venture.
