Help Adam get his Diabetes Dog

Meet my 7-year-old son Adam. Cute isn’t he?
You wouldn’t know it to see him but he suffers from Juvenile Diabetes. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 2 and has been insulin dependent ever since.
How does this affect our lives?
Diabetes impacts everything we do. Unlike Type 2 or Adult Onset which is a metabolic disease, Type 1 is an autoimmune disease; it cannot be managed simply with diet and exercise. Without careful monitoring of his blood sugars, Adam is at risk at any time for serious organ damage, coma, and even death. His diabetes often limits his ability to experience the things other kids take for granted. An ice cream cone, a sleepover, camping trip, even playing outside with his brother and sister.
A diabetes alert dog would change our lives.
This dog could SAVE Adam’s life.
A diabetic alert dog will alert those around Adam whenever his blood sugar levels start to move outside of a safe range. Right now Adam is sent home a lot from school due to high blood sugars. His dog would alert that a change is occurring so his teacher and school nurse could address his needs sooner versus sending him home because his count got too high.
It will also alert us when his sugars fall low. There are times when Adam’s sugars fall so quickly that all of a sudden he doesn’t have the energy to stand. Lows are the scariest and most serious. If not caught in time, his body will just shut down.
We check Adam’s blood sugar throughout the day and night (sleep is a luxury in our house). But, the dog would let me know if in between those checks something was wrong. Type 1 diabetes is unpredictable and his sugars can turn on a dime. A couple of weeks ago even though it hadn’t been that long since his last check, I checked Adam around 2am and he was in the low 40’s; had I not checked him then, he may not have made it through the night.
A diabetes dog would help to change all of this. A diabetes dog would help us all breath easier, relax a bit and worry less.
We are so thankful of anything you can contribute to help us get Adam his life saving dog.
