Brain surgery recovery/cancer treatment for Lalita

As all of you know, I have a beautiful family made up of my husband(Beto) my children (Alegria and Julian), my in-laws, my parents and my sisters. Even though we live very far away from each other, we are very united. This unity allows us to share the good and the bad moments, and to support each other when times are tough. Right now my family is going through a very hard time, because my beloved mother-in-law, Lalita (as know by her loved ones), is extremely sick. This is why I am reaching out to everyone I know, to share with you why we need your help.
Lalita, who is now 69 years old, has lived a life full of hard work, perseverance and love. For many years, as a teacher in two schools (day and night schools) she worked long days waking, up at 4 A.M. to prepare everything for the day, returning very late at night to help her children with homework, grade her students’ homework and prepare lessons for the following day.
I met Lalita when she was 59 years old, she was finishing her Master Degree in Education and was still working as a teacher. I saw her long-days, her dedication and passion for her family, her job and her career. I always wondered “How can someone do so much?”. She had so much energy and her will to continue working hard was empowered by her need to provide for her family and the love she has to them.
I also saw and heard how she was looking forward to having grandchildren and to retire (to have more time for her grandchildren). I always knew she would be an amazing grandmother. She is patient, caring, loving, cooks amazing, loves to read stories and has so much energy for playtime.
When Beto and I announced I was pregnant with Alegria, I would never forget the look in her eyes, her tears of happiness and her expression of “FINALLY!” From the day Alegria was born, Lalita has been the caring and loving grandmother that I knew she would be. Julian and Alegria love her so much and they are so right to love her in the indescribable way they do.
This year, we were planning to travel to Ecuador for the whole summer vacation (almost 3 months), and Lalita couldn’t be happier. Sadly, on January 20 of 2019, Lalita got dizzy, lost balance, fainted and was taken to the ER of the “Carlos Andrade Marin” Hospital. On April 21, after a CT-Scan, other imaging examinations and blood work, a tumor was found on the frontal right side of her brain.
On February 13 of 2019, she underwent her first brain surgery to remove the tumor. Lab results indicated that it was a Grade III Astrocytoma malignant tumor and her doctor recommended radiation therapy and chemotherapy. She was supposed to start her therapies on March 18 of 2019. However, on March 17 of 2019, she presented dizziness and loss of balance and was taken to the hospital again. She was admitted and after imaging, her neurosurgeon said that Lalita's tumor grew back extremely fast, that it is a very aggressive tumor and that it is now twice the size of the one that was extracted.This tumor didn’t even give her time to begin treatment (Chemo and radiation). She underwent her second brain surgery on April 3 of 2019 and is still recovering in the hospital.
We know the medical information, what her diagnosis is and what is expected. She does have type III brain cancer. But I have a certainty that she will be with us for many more years. That in unity we will work hard, support her, be with her, love her every minute of every day the way that she deserves to be loved and cared for. This is just the beginning of our fight for her recovery. She has many more days, months and years ahead of her to love and play with her grandchildren. She still has hundreds of stories to read to them, and many more chocolates to give them. She has not spoiled my children enough yet.
This is why I am here, asking everyone I know to please help us, because when Lalita gets discharged from the hospital (hopefully by then end of April), she will return to her home in Quito where she will find her grandchildren, her children, her husband and me, to care for her and love her. But we need to buy medical equipment and services for the house. This is: hospital bed, shower chair, over-bed table, medical trolley, home care nurse, physical therapy among other things and services. In addition to that, we will have to purchase the medicine for her treatments.
As many of you know, we have traveled to Ecuador to be with Lalita during this time. All of these medical expenses have been high and unexpected, which is why the funds that we have right now are not enough to cover all of these costs.
The amount of money that we still need in order to pay for Lalita’s medical expenses is $4000. Since the funds will be used in Ecuador, I want everyone to know that my husband and I live and work in NY, where we also have our bank accounts. We can safely withdraw the money from Ecuador, and will post videos and pictures updating our donors how their donation is being used.

Como todos usted saben, tengo una familia hermosa compuesta por mi esposo (Beto) mis hijos (Alegría y Julián), mis suegros y cuñada, mis padres y mis hermanas. A pesar de que vivimos muy lejos, somos bien unidos. Esta unidad ha permitido que compartamos los buenos y malos momentos, y que nos apoyemos en tiempos difíciles. Lalita, quien tiene 69 años de edad, ha vivido una vida de trabajo duro, perseverancia y amor. Durante muchos años, ella trabajó como profesora en dos colegios (una en régimen diurno y otra en nocturno). Ella trabajaba días largos, despertando a las 4 A.M. para preparar todo para el día, y regresaba bien tarde en la noche para ayudar a sus hijos con sus tareas, corregir los deberes de sus alumnos y preparar las lecciones del siguiente día.
Yo conocí a Lalita cuando ella tenía 59 años, estaba terminando su Maestría en Pedagogía y continuaba siendo profesora. Yo ví sus días largos, su dedicación y su pasión por su familia, su trabajo y su carrera. Yo siempre me preguntaba “Cómo alguien puede hacer tanto?”. Lalita tenía tanta energía y su motor para continuar trabajando duro era su necesidad de proveer para su familia y el amor que siente por ellos.
También vi y escuché cómo ella estaba ansiosa por tener nietos y por jubilarse (para tener más tiempo con sus nietos). Yo siempre supe que ella sería una abuelita maravillosa. Ella es paciente, cariñosa, amorosa, cocina increíble, le encanta leer historietas y tiene tanta energía para jugar.
Cuando Beto y yo anunciamos que estaba embarazada de Alegría, nunca olvidaré su mirada, sus lágrimas de felicidad y su expresión facial de “¡POR FIN!” Desde el día que Alegría nació, Lalita fue la abuelita amorosa y dedicada que supe que sería. Julian y Alegría la aman tanto y tienen toda la razón de amarla de esa forma tan indescriptible.
Este año, teníamos planeado viajar a Ecuador durante todo el verano (casi 3 meses), y mi Lalita no podía estar más feliz. Tristemente, el 20 de enero del 2019 Lalita sufrió un mareo, perdió el equilibrio y se desmayó. Fue llevada a Emergencias del Hospital Carlos Andrade Marín. El 21 de enero, después de varios examenes medicos, encontraron un tumor en la parte frontal derecha del cerebro.
El 13 de febrero de 2019, se le realizó su primera cirugía para extraer este tumor. Los resultados de laboratorio revelaron que se trata de un tumor maligno, Astrocitoma tipo III y le recomendaron radioterapia y quimioterapia. Lalita tenía que empezar estos tratamientos el 18 de Marzo de 2019. Sin embargo, el 17 de marzo de 2019, presentó mareos y pérdida de equilibrio y fue llevada al hospital otra vez. Fue ingresada de emergencia y despues de examenes de imagen, encontraron que el tumor volvio a crecer y que se trata de un tumor agresivo y que ahora es el doble del tamaño inicial. Este tumor ni siquiera le dio tiempo para empezar su tratamiento (Quimio y radioterapia). El 3 de abril de 2019, Lalita se sometió a su segunda cirugía para extraer el tumor recurrente de cerebro y todavía se encuentra en recuperación en el hospital.
Conocemos la información médica, su diagnóstico y sabemos lo que se espera. Lalita tiene cáncer cerebral tipo III. Pero tengo la seguridad de que ella todavía va a estar con nosotros por muchos años más. Que en unidad vamos a trabajar duro, vamos a apoyarnos, vamos a estar con ella, amarla cada minuto de cada día en la forma que ella se merece que la amemos y la cuidemos. Esto solo es el comienzo de nuestra lucha por su recuperación. Ella todavía tiene muchos días, meses y años más para amar y jugar con sus nietos. Ella todavía tiene cientos de cuentos que leerles y muchos chocolates por darles. Ella todavía no los ha consentido lo suficiente.
Por eso estoy aquí, pidiendo a todas las personas que conozco que nos ayuden, porque cuando Lalita sea dada de alta del hospital (ojala sea para finales de Abril), ella regresará a su hogar in Quito, donde la esperan sus nietos, sus hijos, su esposo y yo, para cuidarla y amarla. Pero tenemos que comprar equipos médicos para la casa. Esto es: cama de hospital, mesa de cama de hospital, carrito/silla médica, silla de ducha, enfermera de casa, terapia física y otras cosas y servicios. Adicional a eso, tenemos que comprar la medicina para sus tratamientos.
Como muchos de ustedes saben, vinimos a Ecuador para estar con Lalita en estos momentos. Todos los gastos médicos han sido altos e inesperados por lo que los fondos que tenemos no son suficientes para cubrir todos estos gastos.
La cantidad de dinero que aun necesitamos es $4000 (US dollars). Debido a que los fondos se utilizaran en Ecuador, quiero que todos sepan que mi esposo y yo vivimos y trabajamos en NY, donde tenemos nuestras cuentas bancarias en la cual se depositaria las donaciones de esta campana. Nosotros podemos retirar el dinero desde Ecuador gracias a convenios que tiene nuestro banco con bancos de aca, y publicaremos fotos y videos dando a conocer a nuestros donantes el destino de sus donaciones.
