Botetourt Goes To World

Donation protected
Odyssey of the Mind is an international creativity competition that helps students develop skills in problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, math, language arts, science, writing, engineering, and the performing arts. 800+ teams from 26 countries and the United States will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University May 23-27, and the Botetourt Odyssey of the Mind Team has qualified to compete!

The team consists of 5 students in 4th and 5th grade. They have been together for 3 years, since they were 3rd graders. They have placed 1st in Regional Competition every year. As third graders in 2016 they placed 4th in State Competition. As fourth graders in 2017 they placed 3rd in State Competition. Now as fifth graders in their last year (2018) at Botetourt, they placed 2nd and earned their ticket to World Competition.  In order to accomplish this, they competed against over 40 teams from all over the state. This is the kind of dedication, hard work, and perseverance we hope to instill in all of our students. Three years of problem solving has finally paid off for them.

This year the Botetourt Team created and presented an original  performance depicting a Stellar Hangout where three original creatures visit. They wrote an original script, created all of their own props, scenery, and costumes, and learned about teamwork and creativity along the way!

Room and Board for the competition will be  at the Iowa State University and costs $595 for each person  (Students, coaches, and chaperones). Wealso need to ship the set and that will cost around $700. The last big expense is plane fare. Flights into Des Moine, Iowa are booked (since 23 countries are flying in!) so we are flying into Minneapolis, Minnesota and driving down to Iowa.  Full payment for the room and board must be made by April 27. The World Tournament is May 23-27 in Ames, Iowa.

This is how you can help! We are seeking sponsors to make donations to help offset the cost of attending the World Finals. Every little bit helps, thank you so much for helping make this happen!
