Books & Book Lights to Puerto Rico

$5,850 of $7,500 goal

Raised by 113 people in 3 months
Three weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated the Island, we finally made contact with a young cousin there.  She described the long dark nights without power and children feeling  anxious and wondering how to spend their time. We remembered some of our own experiences in unexpected darkness.  We read to each other and told each other stories.  It was comforting and brought our family together.

Power in Puerto Rico is not expected to be restored in many communities for months. No one knows when many schools will reopen. We are storytellers, authors, librarians, educators, and book lovers, joining together to send books and book lights now  to shorten and to bring some comfort to  the many long dark nights ahead.

We are reaching out to you-  to anyone who has ever been a little anxious in the dark and to everyone who has  experienced the pleasure of reading a book and knows the feeling of closeness - huddling together sharing a book or a story.

Scholastic Books,  a major children’s book publisher has pledged to help with  deep discounts for purchases.

A family owned business that makes the wonderful and powerful Beam n Read® book light has offered to provide these lights, also for a very deep discount.

Best yet, we have found a grateful and willing partner, The Puerto Rican Family Institute
(a non-profit agency) that runs Head Start Programs in 15 affected municipalities serving over 1600 children.  Many of these sites are still closed but PRFI staff are bringing their programs to shelters and darkened homes.

Funds are needed now for purchases of the books, lights, batteries and shipping expenses. Our goal is to provide at least one book to all 1600 children, as well as to their older siblings, and a book light to each household.

The pieces are in place.  Let's get these lights and books to the children now!

Thank you so much for your help and for sharing this campaign with your own network.

Finally, long after the power comes back, the power of reading and reading together as a family will continue.  So your gift now is providing immediate and needed relief and at the same time will be "feeding two birds with one seed" by encouraging long term literacy.

Books, Lights, Kids and Teachers... first photos came today from the Puerto Rican Family Institute along with the most touching expressions of gratitude. These first distributions went to facilities and families still without power. Thank you, thank you all of our wonderful contributions and co-creators of this effort! 240 lights- batteries to go with them, and close to 1000 books have arrived. After the holidays when PFRI is back in session we will make final purchases. We will keep the campaign active until then so it's still not to late to share the campaign with your networks. We're 2/3 of the way to our hoped for goal. Happy Holidays everyone... may the light of peace and comfort shine on you! Liz and Bob

Wow! Two great milestones to report. We heard from PFRI yesterday. They had just opened the first boxes of books from Scholastic, purchased with your donations, and they were ecstatic!

AND... Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is donating 460 board books... enough to give each of the youngest of PFRI's kids 2 books each! (The retail purchase value of these books is over $4000!

As of today, we are getting very close to the $5000 milestone in donations.

Thank you, thank you again for supporting this effort. We are so grateful!

Staff members from the PUerto Rican Family Institute are bringing their Head Start programs right into families homes, as some of their facilities still haven't opened. This photo was taken during daylight hours last week. Early next week we expect the first shipment of book-lights to arrive; books may take a little longer. Even some staff members living in San Juan do not have electricity yet. One staff member is so excited about the books and lights- since she is reading now by flashlight to her grandchildren! Thank you everyone who has donated... if you have not yet donated... PLease consider! $10 brings another really powerful actual light to a family, and the light of togetherness, and knowing that friends and strangers from afar are thinking of them! $5 buys 2 books! Every donation, large or small matters and and of course Everyone Matters!
