Inspiring the Love of Reading

Donation protected
Our names are Nina Hussing and Melody Chabala and we are currently working at a title 1 school located in North Charleston, SC. We are both teaching 6th grade English and found a common interest in using book clubs in our classrooms. As a title 1 school, our funds are extremely limited. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to fund this amazing opportunity. Your contribution will help us with the cost of the books as well as the teaching tools to implement the clubs.

Our students:

Our students are excited and nervous to start the newest, and perhaps the most difficult, chapter of their lives: Middle School. As teachers in a low income school, we know our students face many challenges at home. Our goal is to have a structured and inviting classroom setting where they'll feel that starting middle school can be crossed of their "worry" list.

These kids are going to love reading and writing this year!
Many of our students are reluctant readers/writers and don't have much confidence in their reading/writing ability. We've got great plans for them this year! We can't wait to watch the progress they make.

Our Project
Most of the children in our 6th grade classes are below grade level in their reading. They are extremely reluctant readers and have low self confidence when it comes to reading. We will do whatever it takes to help our students develop a love of reading. With these differentiated books for book clubs, not only will our students be more motivated to read, but they will also be learning about social issues, reading for empathy and advocacy.
